New York 110 year old Willis Avenue Bridge was replaced last summer when a new 2400 ton bridge span was shipped 136 miles on two welded-together barges and installed between Manhattan and the Bronx. Watch this gorgeous time-lapse of the entire installation.
The new Willis Avenue Bridge was completed and opened to traffic on October 2, 2010. Although the $612 million cost was more than double the original cost estimate, the new span was finished ahead of the projected completion date. According to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), which maintains the Willis Avenue Bridge, the four-lane span carries approximately 75,000 vehicles per day (AADT).
The project was a great success, and photographer/filmmaker Stephen Mallon and his crew captured the move and installation in this spectacular and enchanting time-lapse video. Mallon even managed to shorten one of Mayor Bloomberg's speeches.
