One of the first things you notice about Kanatal is that it’s tucked away in a little corner of the glorious Himalayan range. There are almost no signboards indicating you’ve reached this nondescript hill station, so you’ll probably find yourself a little lost. However, some of the prominent hotels there, such as The Terraces, have several welcome signs aiding your comfortable arrival. The fact that this is a difficult place to find is a clear indication that it is untouched by the clutches of commercialism and the prying eyes of a large tourist population, thereby enabling you to enjoy the beauty of the place at your own pace.

The landscapes you witness during the seven hour drive from Delhi, via the holy town of Haridwar and the gorgeous valley of Doon to Kanatal are the usual suspects you would witness at hill stations. Narrow winding roads flanked by tall trees, mostly of the pine or deodhar variety, all soaked in breathtaking mountain views. And as you go further uphill, the pure mountain air refreshes your senses. Suddenly, you realise how little you have seen in your own country.

The most enjoyable way to discover this quaint haven is simple—walk. Treks are common here, they not only enable you to appreciate the surrounding nature’s bounty at length, but also it lends the best pathways for you to unearth the place’s hidden jewels. Apple orchards, pear trees, wild flowers, pine cones strewn all over, tiny temples and smiling locals are a few of the many things that you’ll find here in abundance. The flowers bloom during springtime, spreading a colourful glow all around. Winter time sees heavy snowfall here, covering the place is a coat of pristine white snow. You can also visit nearby areas such as the Surkhanda Devi Temple, Tehri Dam, the woods of Dhanaulti, Kaudia and Devdarshini forests.
Many people make this journey with the hope to unveil their spiritual side. And rightfully so. The biggest reward Kanatal bestows upon the wandering traveller is the gift of silence. All too often the clouds descend and lay a resting hand upon the magnificent mountains while soft mist shrouds the valley below. It’s in that very moment when you realise the futility of the spoken word as a smile emanates from within and silence fills the now restful soul.

Kanatal will reaffirm your faith in the simple way of life. Take a walk amid the rows of trees, smell the fragrance of the flowers, lay back and gaze at the clouds passing by for hours at end, imbibe the various sounds of nature, sip a steamy cup of tea and let go of the chaos and clutter of daily life. Kanatal is certainly not an extraordinary destination; it is a simple place with an extraordinary impact. So if you’re looking for a place to have a peaceful and undisturbed conversation with nature, Kanatal is ideal.
