Interview

"Aamir is an amazing human being with insane amount of patience."

Composer, singer and producer Ram Sampat is certainly on cloud nine these days. And why not, after all his song Bhaag D K Bose from the film DELHI BELLY, is topping the charts and has already become a sensation. Recently we caught up with the very talented Ram Sampat, music composer of Aamir Khan's much touted film DELHI BELLY. Here are the excerpts.

The music of DELHI BELLY is really doing well. D K Bose song has become a huge rage. Were you expecting such kind of response
It's fair to say we were expecting a response, but not the kind of overwhelming response we've received! I'm totally blown away by just how much it's connected with people.

We hear DK Bose song was a last minute addition?
It wasn't a last minute addition, but it took a while for me to get down to recording it. I had composed the melody but needed clarity on what the lyrics of the song should be about & Aamir guided us in that aspect. After that, it was done in two days.

Aamir is damn impressed with your work and he says a star is born what do you have to say about this? How was the experience working with perfectionist Aamir Khan? He gave inputs?
It's an honour to be acknowledged by an artist like him. For me, it beats winning a Grammy. As a producer, he's a composer's dream because he loves his music! There's a big misconception that he's interfering. Nothing could be further from the truth. He is of the view that the best idea/ suggestion in the interest of the film must win. I had started working on the songs on my own initiative and when he heard them, he was excited. He could see what I was trying to do and only guided us along the way. He always consults the whole team and decisions are only made once everyone is convinced. He could be an autocratic producer if he chose to, but in actuality, he's an amazing human being with an insane amount of patience. I learnt a lot from him.

Have you composed all the 10 tracks of DELHI BELLY?
Yes, I have.

Back then using expletives or abusive words was a topic of taboo in Indian society however the scenario has changed drastically. Now it has become a sort of trend to grab the attention. You think it's right for publicity?
I think films that reflect the changing reality of society will also reflect the language of the times. It's natural. There's an honesty to Bhaag DK Bose. It reflects what our lives have become and has a context beyond the film. That's one of the things art is meant to do - hold up a mirror to society. Of course, there will be people who will milk a trend for publicity, but that's nothing new and there's nothing to worry about. They'll hop onto the next bandwagon that comes along!

Which is your favourite Aamir Khan song till date?
Pehlaa Nasha from the film JO JEETA WOHI SIKANDER.

Which instrument you like the most to use in your sound tracks?
Too many to mention, but today, it's harmonica.

Which classic song would you love to remix?
None. Let classics be classics.

Are you a fan of Saigal sahab? Why you chose Saigal Blues for DELHI BELLY?
I'm a huge fan of K.L. Saigal. I think he's India's greatest blues singer. I had discussed this idea of paying a "Blues" tribute to Saigal Saheb with Abhinay Deo, the director of DELHI BELLY & Chetan Shashital (the singer & co-lyricist of the song), years ago. DELHI BELLY turned out to be the perfect vehicle for the song, as blues and roots music were huge influences on the soundtrack and I had a fearless producer like Aamir Khan, who is fascinated by history. I hope we can remind people of the phenomenal legacy of K.L. Saigal!

Which is your favourite rock band/Singer?
I've been listening to a lot of folk, roots, blues, punk & funk music in preparation for DELHI BELLY. My current favourite international singer is Manu Chao.

Which recent albums did you like?
"Dimanche a Bamako" by Amadou & Miriam, album produced by Manu Chao.

Your future projects?
A vacation. We'll see what happens after that!

Sizzling beauty Katrina Kaif has done few daredevil stunts for her upcoming film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Katrina Kaif Katrina Actress Heroine Hot Beauty Sexy Heroine Katrina Kaif I was angry says

Sizzling beauty Katrina Kaif has done few daredevil stunts for her upcoming film 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'.

The role she played in the film demanded the actress to do both dirt biking and deep sea diving, which were so stressful.

"Both, dirt biking and deep sea diving were more traumatic than I had initially anticipated. I had the basic understanding of smaller bikes, but I had to practice with a bigger and heavier one for the movie. I refused to understand that you've to let the bike fall, as I was being stubborn and trying to prevent it from going down. So I got hurt once or twice. As for diving, I had learnt it in a pool, but had to shoot the scenes in seas with choppy waters. It was so stressful that at the end of the four-day shoot in the waters, I had lost three and half kilos," said Katrina.

Katrina had close encounters with the sharks while shooting in the sea.

"Well, I was told about the sharks later, after we had finished the shoot. I was angry at not being informed earlier, but I was explained that the knowledge could have caused me to panic and hamper my performance. Of course, if I had known about the sharks, I wouldn't have ventured into the waters. About a month later, I heard the place was shut due to sharks," said the actress.

Hope Katrina's hard work will pay off!

RA.ONE Interview Shahrukh Khan Shahrukh Khan Interview RA.ONE

"We are very nervous about RA.ONE"

Shahrukh Khan will soon be added to the list of on-screen superheroes with RA.ONE, in which he's playing G.One. In this interview, he reveals more about the eagerly awaited film, which is scheduled to release this Diwali.

Firstly, isn't it too early to start promoting a film which releases in Diwali?
When such a film is made, the marketing has to be a bit different. I want the Indian audience to get familiarised with the characters of this film. I wanted to introduce the character G.One so that by the time you go to watch the film, you kind of know the power, and you have seen a part of it jumping around, flying and feel that you know the superhero. That's the whole intention.

Can you tell a bit about the characters in the film?
G.One is the life giver, who saves life. He is the hero. I am playing G.One in the film. RA.One is actually Random Access Version One but it also stands for Raavan. Mythologically, a majority consider him as a bad person made of the world's 10 most evil brains. That's what the ten heads of Raavan's head represent and here it's like the connotation of 10 evil happenings of the world that sums up to make a character Ra.One.

Your character is called G.One. So why is the film titled RA.ONE and not G.ONE?
Many of my friends, Karan (Johar), Adi (Aditya Chopra) suggested me to change the name to G.ONE. But whenever I have seen any superhero or larger than life film, including SHOLAY or MR. INDIA, we very much talked about Gabbar Singh or Mogambo or Shakal. So I thought if I keep it RA.ONE it would be bit different. People might be confused and take me as RA.ONE but it is not so. Evil doesn't have any face, that's also logic behind keeping this name.

Do you think RA.ONE will be a path-breaking film?
RA.ONE will be a new thing for Indian films. It will make our films advanced. I've been working for 20 years. A film being a hit or a flop is a small thing. I just think that I should do something for films, because of which I am what I am. Anubhav has worked for over 5 years now for this film and is still working. We are very nervous about RA.ONE.

Have you done the stunts yourself?
I have done 70 to 80 percent of the stunts myself! Yes, there were harnesses, but the sequences were exhausting. I lost about 6 kgs while shooting for the film. It was very strenuous. It was difficult to have food and I couldn't even go to the loo.

The song from RA.ONE, which is sung by Akon has made its way on the internet. You must obviously be very upset.
That was the earlier version of the song. It's very unfortunate. I am very depressed by that, more depressed than any other news that I have heard. That was the trial version. The original version is with us and I have told everyone to take a little more care.

Why the title character Ra.One is not seen in the promo?
You won't get to see Ra.One until the film releases. We would reveal the character of Ra.One slowly, said Shah Rukh.

Do you feel RA.ONE will be a huge hit? I hope it does well. I'm not the kind of person who will make serious cinema. I still like my commercial cinema. We are all very charged about this film. It's a family film. It's about a father-son relationship. I feel that fathers are ignored in Hindi Cinema. I've made this film for fathers. It is a classically designed superhero film. To give it relevance in today's time of the internet, we have created a superhero out of electricity and pixels. We have tried to be a little innovative. Once you see the film, that innovation hopefully would be an attractive aspect of the film. It's a family film like 90% of my films are. It will be enjoyed by all.

'I don't think Aamir Khan should help me'

The promos of DELHI BELLY have caught everyone's attention, especially with the song Bhag D.K. Bose becoming a rage. It's a special film for Imran Khan as it's his first release post marriage. In a tête-à-tête, he speaks about DELHI BELLY, mamu Aamir Khan, his career and more.

There was a report saying that DELHI BELLY is about the confusion of the excreta of two people. Is it true?
Not exactly. S**t does happen but it's not about two peoples excreta getting exchanged. DELHI BELLY is about three boys who coincidentally get caught up in a very big crime caper. They don't know why they are stuck, who is after them and what is going on. They try to get out of the whole thing alive.

Was it a deliberate attempt to hide the story of the film? Yes, because in the film these guys don't know who is after them and what is going on. So, we felt it was a good idea if the audience goes on the journey with them and figure out things with the boys.

Do you feel because of DK Bose being a rage, there is added pressure for the film to do well?
Actually I think if a song does well, it takes off a lot of pressure from us. If a song does well, it gives our publicity an added boost. It means that more people are excited about the film and more people are interested in the film. So eventually the pressure becomes less.

'I think if a song does well, it takes off a lot of pressure from us'
What role are you playing in the film?
I play the character of Taashi who's a journalist. He's a guy who is not really in control of his life. He's drifting from one thing to the next. He's going wherever the tide takes him. He is forced to stand up and take control of his life.

Do you have a female lead opposite to your character?
Yes, Shenaz Treasuryvala and Poorna Jagannathan are cast opposite me in the film. So there is a love triangle angle in the film as well. But primarily it's about these three boys and their problems.

The film has been ready since a long time. Is it true that the film went through many changes on the editing table?
It wasn't ready. We shot it about two and a half years ago. As soon as we finished shooting the film, our director Abhinay Deo had to start his next film GAME as he had committed to that. So he was not able to cut the film. At the same time, Aamir was bust shooting for 3 IDIOTS. So he was also not available. With the director and producer busy on other films, DELHI BELLY just sat and we had to wait for them to finish their commitments.

Were you impatient about the film not releasing?
No, that's part of the business. Films take years to get made.

Was Aamir Khan apprehensive about producing this film as it's very different from the kind of films that he has produced?
Honestly, I don't know. But he's never been a guy who is afraid of anything. I came on the project after he had picked it up as a producer. For whatever its worth, he's been a guy who is not afraid to try new things.

Do you approach Aamir with your scripts before signing any film?
No, till date he has never read a script (of mine). Nor has he ever met a producer or a director. In fact he has not even seen a lot of my films.

Don't you think he should help you?
I don't think Aamir should help me. I prefer to figure things out for myself. That's how you learn things in life.

Your last few films have not done well. So are you desperate to get a hit now?
My last film, BREAK KE BAAD did moderate business. Prior to that I HATE LUV STORYS was a hit. LUCK didn't do well. So it's been kind of alternate (hit and flop) for me.

Do you regret doing any of your previous films?
I don't regret doing any of my films. You have to move on in life. There's no actor in the industry who doesn't have flops.

So are you hoping that DELHI BELLY should work big time?
I hope all my films do well. As of now, I have two successes and two failures. So I'm at a decent position.

How was the experience working with Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vir Das?
They are both very very fine actors. Besides that, today they have become very dear friends of mine. The process of working with them was the best professional experience that I've had so far.

There's a section of press saying your PIL is well timed in accordance with the release of your film. What do you have to say?
I've always been very particular that when I'm on DELHI BELLY platform with my co-stars, I don't talk about this. And when I'm talking about the PIL, I don't even take the name of my film. I've been
'With the director and producer busy on other films, DELHI BELLY just sat'
very particular about separating the two issues. Anyone who has been involved in a legal process in India would know that it takes years. DELHI BELLY is going to be released on July 1. The PIL will go on for the next couple of years. It will take time, money and effort on my behalf. There are many easier ways in which I can get publicity.

At what age did you first start drinking?
I had my first drink when I was 18 with my mom and dad.

On a personal note, how has life changed post marriage? It hasn't. I've been with Avantika for nine years. So the marriage certificate doesn't change anything.

Are you a more responsible person now?
What is important is your intention in your relationship and your commitment to someone. There are people who are married and are cheating on their wives. There are people who are not married and are faithful to their partners. What ultimately matters is your intention.

Don't you get affected with rumours surrounding your life? You can't pay attention to that. People say bad things today; tomorrow they'll say good things. Then again they'll say bad things. You have to ignore rumours; otherwise you'll go crazy.

What are your future projects?
Apart from SHORT TERM SHAADI and MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN, I have not signed any other films.

"Rock On... Yuhin Dekhta Hai Kya Tu, Rock On...Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara!" Popular, successful and crazy trend of picking up the catchy-line of hit track as title of the flick continues with Zoya Akhtar's second directorial venture, ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA (ZNMD). DIL CHAHTA HAI, LAKSHYA, ROCK ON, LUCK BY CHANCE and KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK, all had one thing in common - the combo of lyricist Javed Akhtar and triumphant trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (S-E-L). The trend continues prosperously in ZNMD and once again, it's a youthful roller-coaster ride journey that packs "hot "n" happening" talents of B-town in one package. To be precise, the feel is that of Spanish's civic and cultural rendezvous, theme is boy-bonding, grandeur is adventurous and so music has to equally befitting to make every feisty happening loud on big-screen. Mercurially high on expectations (all above-mentioned were big musical hits), the album is presumed to be one of the big bonanza of this year from S-E-L, as recently they disappointed with pack of above-average to mediocre albums (PATIALA HOUSE, GAME). Can S-E-L be able to relive the musical passion that they are specialist and capable for in youth genre flick like ZNMD? Can we expect ZNMD to be next grand happening on musical stands? Let's explore and excavate its musical facts...

Volcanic in grooves, grungy hard-metal base in style and sporadically youthful, with the zestful feel of "buddy-bonding" gets an opulence of upbeat rock-beat styling in immensely captivating "Dil Dhadkane Do". It pumps up the arena-stylized rocking grind of "Rock On" (ROCK ON) into the carefree funky grooves of "Dil Chahta Hai" (DIL CHAHTA HAI) and the end result is presumably remarkable. This soaring "n" roaring boy-band feel track has vocal pacing of Joi Barua, Suraj Jagan and Shankar Mahadevan, in energetically high octaves to deliver out bagful of "masti" and thrills. S-E-L specialty in inundating a fervently catchy signature tuneful feel takes the bigger cake and sets the decorum of playful setting of adventurous endeavors. It's a great amalgam of electronic guitar riffs, synthesizers pulsating moves matched with recurring percussions that makes ballistic concoction with boyishly toned voices. Javed Akhtar's meaningfully poetic moves unravels from making friends ("Jahaan muskurahatien hain bikhri, Jahaan se gum sa mausam gaya, Jahaan meethi baatein, Har ik ajnabi se ho") to spirit of bonding ("Gaaye naye naye geet, Khel aisa kyun na koi khele, Jisme sabhi ki ho jeet"), epitomizing the mindset of this youthful joy ride. On repetitive hearing, the breezy signature tune ("Kab tak giney, Hum dhadkne...) gets direct into senses and all-together gives a positive "feel-good" feel of togetherness, overall an exceptionally fun-filled track that will be having maximum takers in weeks to come. Excellent!

Red-red tomato festival sparks blooms, the much-publicized track "Ik Junoon (Paint it red)," arrives with its set of funky beats and grooves. S-E-L are back again with "Ooh-aah" types of disco-jigs that forms a peppier prelude, mesmerizing out discotheque feel of their immensely popular "Uff teri ada" (KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK) and "Where's the party tonight" (KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA) with feverish voices coming speedily in streams of DJ spins and electronically tuned sounds. It's fine collage of voices as singers like Vishal Dadlani, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Gulraj Singh, and Alyssa Mendonsa, club together to gyrate out an impulsive carnival feel. It bears a typical S-E-L stamp, a relatively familiar sounding track that is high on enthusiastic youthful spirits and is likely to be a rage on floors. This Spanish tomato feisty track gets its bouncy remix version in "Ik Junoon (remix)", a racing thrilling disco-beat version that is contemporary in DJ antics and should work promisingly in the promotions of the flick. Rocking!

Scintillatingly stringy in instrumentals, the first Spanish binge arrives in soft-tender feminine dominated vocals with genteel breeze of light-hearted orchestrations in soothing "Khabon Ke Parinday". It sounds like much deserving sequel to S-E-L earlier composed "Phir Dekhiye" (ROCK ON) with added innovative touches. Alyssa Mendonsa's light-breeze vocal ooze is really delightful and is mesmerized to deliver out an earthy country-western rock appeal. Javed Akhtar's aspiring wordings are simplistically penned and form buoyancy with the tender-light arrangements. Mohit Chauhan's brief rendition may not be as pleasing as Alyssa's breezy tones but is perfectly balanced in making this an "easy-on-ears" duet.

So you think you can sing! After making valiant attempt at playback singing in couple of tracks in ROCK ON with commercial success, Farhan Akhtar holds the mike again and gets friendly support of his co-stars in lovable sounding "Senorita" (meaning "Miss" in Spanish). Hrithik Roshan turned melancholic singer in his home production KITES ("Kites in the sky") and now again regales back in this track. It's really fun to find Abhay Deol enjoy singing and all three finding a great singing partner in Spanish singer Maria Del Mar Fernandez, who sings the Spanish part with great enthuse and exult. It's really "cool" experimentation as the soundtrack is fuelled high by Spanish flamengo music, tangy guitar riffs, synchronized hand-claps and couple of customary Spanish instrumentals that add zeal to this singing show. The song is already getting rave reviews in its promo features and looks more like an extended version of "Dil Laga Na" (DHOOM 2). Javed Akhtar's sweet lyrics talks in lovable chatter and sounds more like Hindi translation to the Spanish wording, sung by Spanish singer. It's a great hear (yes, it's a big surprise!) and all three actors clicks perfects as compatible singers.

"Senorita (remix)" is high on Spanish animated funky beats and carries the fun to higher tempo and makes it a real hip-shaking treat for party-freaks. Entertaining!

"Der Lagi lekin", a motivationally penned track with thematically emotional hues, brings out the refined solo vocals of Shankar Mahadevan to the fore. This sentimental offering has modest soft-rock ballad arrangements and talks about the self-realization, changing phases of life; sounding more like an extended version of Shankar's rendered "O Rahi Re" (LUCK BY CHANCE). It has routine arrangements but does not disappoint and can be useful narrative vehicle in the closing stages of the film.

S-E-L infatuation for 80's disco binge makes its racy makeover in the next offering that adds colorful shades to "buddy-bonding" in "Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein". This friendly track has likable vocals of Dominique Cerejo, Clinton Cerejo and Loy Mendonca brings out fervor of disco-dancing and relives the compassion of earlier peppy tracks. For its "feel-good" ambience and chorals based evocative feel, it can be presumed to be a "cool" background score for the lighter moments of the film, a visually spectacle vision with great landscaped views will be of great help in making this as another desired musical feature of the album.

"Toh Zinda Ho Tum", the last offering of the album, comes more like dramatic monologue about "Zinda-dilli" by deep-throated Farhan Akhtar. It's more like a poetry recital that is expressive and try to convey the theme in simple one-liners like "Dilon mein tum apni betaabiyan leke chal rahe ho, Toh zinda ho tum, Nazar mein khwaabon ki bijliyan leke chal rahe ho, Toh zinda ho tum...", one expects a similar Shakespearean style of climax in this flick, that worked magic in Farhan's first directorial venture DIL CHAHTA HAI.

ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA brings alive and back the old and quintessentially rocking S-E-L in the most promising way. Banking on likable and strong face value and lavish production opulence, the album's most prize-worthy assets are "Dil Dhadkane Do", "Ik Junoon (Paint it red)" and "Senorita" while there is raw energy of expressions in tracks like "Khabon Ke Parindey", "Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein" and "Der Lagi Lekin". For listeners, it's raining good albums (SHAITAN, DELHI BELLY) and ZNMD adds to this great line-up, go grab it and add one more to your collection. Happy Listening!

Mahesh Babu Mahesh Superstar Prince Star Hero Mahesh Babu earns 80% of his income through ads

Hero earns 80% of his income through ads
If anyone has doubts over the statement that 'Actors can earn more money through endorsements, than in films', have a look at this...

The trend of brand endorsements by Tollywood actors has reached a new peak. Most of the top actors are raking in money from ads now-a-days. Especially, when it comes to Mahesh.

Mahesh Babu's business plan: At Rs 3 crore per brand, trade pundits say he pockets around Rs 26 crore a year in endorsements. Currently, Mahesh is endorsing 10-12 major brands. Thums Up, UniverCell, Provogue, Amrutanjan Paim Balm, Vivel Shampoo, Idea Cellular, Navaratan Hair Oil and very recently, he started endorsing Jos Alukkas Jewellers. Also few more companies were in talks with the star, for endorsing their brand.

"It is clearly much more than what he earns by acting in a film,'' said a trade analyst.

Coming to films, Mahesh takes atleast one year to complete a film. He charges a remuneration of around Rs 6 crores per film. In that case, almost 80% of his total income is from ads. Great going Mahesh!
