Top 5 Bollywood Arranged Marriages This Salman-Aishwarya story truly depicts that desire may rule the heart, but it’s love that lights up the soul. After realising that his newly wedded wife (Ash) is in love with someone else, Ajay Devgn still has the heart to take her to her love story of Dev (Sunil Shetty) and Anjali (Shilpa Shetty), who are head over heels in love. But not only there is a caste difference, there is a class

Bollywood ‘romance’ is mostly about boy-chasing-girl, girl-playing-coy… and after a couple of songs and a bit of opposition from families they finally live happily ever after. That's the perfect love marriage in Bollywood. But with Tanu Weds Manu releasing shortly, where the protagonists enter into an arranged-marriage, we take a look at other films that successfully deployed a similar set up without following the formula.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

This Salman-Aishwarya story truly depicts that desire may rule the heart, but it’s love that lights up the soul. After realising that his newly wedded wife (Ash) is in love with someone else, Ajay Devgn still has the heart to take her to her lover’s (Salman Khan) place, just because her happiness matters more to him than his own. Of course, Ash soon realises the difference between infatuation and love and wastes no time running into the arms of the man whom her parents had chosen for her.

Dhadkan

Dhadkan tells the story of Dev (Sunil Shetty) and Anjali (Shilpa Shetty), who are head over heels in love. But not only there is a caste difference, there is a class difference too, and that’s why her rich parents force her to marry business tycoon Ram (Akshay Kumar). Torn apart, Anjali initially finds it difficult to connect to her husband. But as months go by she finally realises how kind-hearted Ram is. And as fate would have it, they live happily ever after!

Vivah

If you thought arranged marriages are too passé, you’ve got to watch Vivah. It will introduce you to the traditional side, without getting orthodox. Prem (Shahid Kapoor) isn’t really ready to settle down; but just to please his father he agrees to meet Poonam (Amrita Rao). Although he initially feels quite awkward in this ‘arranged’ set up, their formal meeting soon turns into an informal date after having heart-to-heart conversation with each other. Vivah is a classic example of a successful arranged marriage, probably the kind our parents have.

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun

The old-world charm of an arranged marriage has been depicted brilliantly in this movie through the story of Rajesh (Mohnish Behl) and Pooja (Renuka Shahane). The film will take you back to small pleasures when bride and bridegroom’s extended families meet for the first time, their first banter… and how they sing traditional songs together and liven up the entire environment.

Life Partner

Tusshar Kapoor as goofy Gujju guy Bhavesh, is too cute. He basically believes that his parents are the best judge of how or who his life partner should be. And after selecting Prachi Desai for him, his parents were on cloud nine. Until they realise Prachi is quite headstrong. The tu-tu-mein-mein that follows is something every daughter-in-law goes through, especially when every relation in her household is new; including the one with her husband.
