Dont Mix Alcohol with Energy Drinks

According to a study by team at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, energy drinks contain more caffeine and sugar than a cup of coffee. Caffeine content in an energy drink is 70- 200 mg per 500 ml. That is nearly double the amount in your regular cup of java! (500 ml of instant coffee contains up to 100 mg caffeine).

Not just that, they contain ingredients that are often 'not' mentioned on the label, like herbal stimulant guarana, the amino acid taurine, and other herbs, minerals and vitamins that react with the caffeine. This affects our heart rates, blood pressure and even mental states. The effects worsen if the drink is consumed with alcohol.

We asked experts for more reasons why we should not mix energy drinks with alcohol and here’s what they had to say:

Missing the energy

“Most energy drinks are meant to stimulate your brain. They are therefore high in caffeine, vitamins and minerals,” says Mumbai-based physician, Dr Sunita Dube. It also contains gluconolactone that causes energy drinks to produce more energy and make you more alert. “If consumed with alcohol, these drinks delays the release of energy and causes fatigue,” she explains.

“We don’t feel tired because we are toxicated and under the influence of alcohol; whereas the strong dose of vitamins and minerals detoxify us. So, our brain receives mixed signals,” says Mumbai-based nutritionist Sushila Sharangdhar. “That is also why one tends to feel out of energy after staying up all night studying or completing a project with the help of an energy drink,” she says.

So addictive!

The effect energy drinks have on us is temporary. So, though we tend to get hyperactive and excited post a drink, we start to feel low on energy and get irritable as soon as the effect starts wearing out. “One may also get addicted to energy drinks if he/she depends on them for their dose of energy over a period of time,” Dr Sunita says.
So, next time you feel the need for a shot of energy, run to the water cooler or grab a fruit juice instead of a can of energy drink for a happier you!
