how to choose a good dress Style Tips How to Wear Horizontal Stripes Kaftan dress

Nautical stripes is one of the ageless trends that never goes out of fashion. The striped Breton shirt — as we know it today — came into being shortly following the March 27, 1858 Act of France which introduced the navy and white striped knitted shirt as the uniform for all French navy seaman in Brittany. Inspired by sailors, after a visit to the French coast, Coco Chanel introduced the design to the fashion world through her nautical collection in 1917.
This season, international designers reinvented the trend and it was all over runways, with sailor stripes in red and white, blue and yellow, and black and white on dresses, knitwear, skirts and tees. Says designer Anita Dongre, “Nautical stripes have become a must-have stylish wardrobe staple for summer.”

According to your body type
Horizontal stripes are believed to be a woman’s worst enemy, since they tend to make you look broader than you really are. But if worn cleverly, you can sport this trend no matter what your body type is.

Hourglass
If you have an hourglass figure, you are lucky since you have a proportionate bust and hips — so it is easy for you to draw attention to either of them. Wear a nautical striped tee with your favourite pair of dark denims. If you want to draw attention to the lower part of your body, you can wear nautical trousers with a plain T-shirt or shirt.

Heavy torso

Says designer Payal Jain, “If you are heavy on top, try drawing attention to the lower half of your body by wearing a nautical skirt. Wear a round neck tee along with it to de-emphasise your bust.”

Straight
If you have a straight figure, wear an A-line nautical dress with ruffles to look proportionate.

Pear shaped
“If you are pear-shaped or bottom-heavy, you could sport a nautical T-shirt or shirt with dark trousers or denims that fall straight down from the hip,” says designer Archana Kochhar.

Styles to sport
Designer Sakshee Pradhan says, “Team a nautical top with a printed skirt or a pair of trousers or a summer jacket — nautical can be played well with prints like polka dots, florals or even Africa-inspired!”

Dress
A nautical dress is a great summer option. You can pair a shrug and floral wedge heels. Bling on some chunky accessories and you are good to go! If you are wearing a thick-striped dress, pair it with a thin-striped belt to add glamour.

Jacket
Throw a jacket over a striped vest for instant chic. Pair the jacket with denims or light-coloured trousers to work.

Maxi dress
Do not reserve your maxi dresses for brunches. Pair a nautical maxi dress with a bright belt to define your curves. Wear it with feathered or metal jewellery for a Boho look.

Kaftan dress
A kaftan dress in thick nautical stripes will instantly up your style quotient. Team it with brightly coloured accessories and a rope belt.

Skirt
An A-line skirt with horizontal stripes will look great on you. Opt for darker stripes like black and white or navy blue and white, or pastel shades in pink, green and yellow. Pair this outfit with peep-toe wedges or ballet pumps.

Trousers
Give your denims a miss and try nautical striped trousers. But you need to keep your body type in mind before you go for this look. You can pair the trousers with a formal shirt to work or an informal one for evenings out.

Shorts
Pair nautical shorts with neon tops in pink, yellow, orange, green or blue. Wear a chunky neckpiece and you are ready to rock!

Swimwear
Channel the trend at the pool as well! Sport a high-waisted striped bikini or a one-piece swimsuit with a 50s-inspired sailor bow. Pair it with a fun, printed sarong.”

Accessories
A horizontal striped canvas tote or satchel is perfect for summer. Pair it with a plain bright-coloured tee and jeans with a wide belt.

Colours to pick
Keep it classic with neutral hues in beige, camel, tan or dark colours like navy blue, charcoal black, dark grey or dark moss green
