She ambushes you with a volley of topics. At jet speed. If your concentration wavers even for a minute, you have skipped and missed several viewpoints. Gabbing with Anushka Sharma is like sitting on a Ferris-wheel ride. Diverting and enjoyable.
She grins, grimaces, her face is a full-on map of expressions. I ruffle her with queries on her reported link-ups with all the Kapoor boys — Ranbir, Shahid and newbie, Arjun. Besides Ranvir Singh, of course. She wants to punch the rumour-mongers where it hurts the most.
She’s also one of the busiest girls in showbiz. While she will confirm none of it, talk is that she has reportedly signed Rajkumar Hirani and Anurag Kashyap’s next. All she’ll say is she’s having fun doing ‘look tests,’ workshops and loads of shootings with Imran Khan for Vishal Bharadwaj’s Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola (MKBKM). After that she joins Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif for Yash Chopra’s next. There’s clearly something spice-n-nice about Anushka. Read on…
This is the first time you’re working with Imran Khan. How is he?
There’s a certain calm about Imran. That’s great because I need calm people around me when I’m working. In fact, before this film, Imran and I did a photo shoot together and we instantly hit it off. We had even discussed working together. Ideally, you would imagine Imran and me coming together in an urban romcom. But the way we have been paired in this film is just the opposite. Imran plays this ‘thait’ Haryanvi and I’m playing a modern zamindar ki modern beti, who has studied abroad. Imran is a sorted person. There is no sense of insecurity about him.
Ladies V/S Ricky Bahl (LVRB) failed to create the Band Baaja Baarat (BBB) magic. What do you think went wrong?
You’ll be surprised to know that LVRB did more business than BBB. Yes, it wasn’t loved as much as BBB, which was a story about two people. It was an underdog story and no one expected anything out of it. But people had expectations from LVRB. Ranveer and I told everyone during the promotions not to expect another BBB.
Your character in LVRB wasn’t well-etched. Did you realise that while shooting the film?
My job as an actor is to portray the character to the best of my abilities. For LVRB, the critics wrote there was nothing lacking in terms of performance but they wished they’d seen more of me. There was something amiss with the character and I take responsibility for it.
You wore a bikini for a song in Badmaash Company and then again in LVRB. Was it really needed or just a gimmick to draw in the audiences?
If we wanted to draw audiences we would have included the bikini scene in the theatrical trailer. Yes, it did appear in the news before the LVRB release. From our end, we didn’t speak about it at all. Actually, the context in which I wear it has to be understood. I was seducing a conman and had to appear in front of him in that avatar.
Rumours about Ranveer Singh and you just don’t seem to die down…
Ranveer is a friend and I went to watch a movie with him recently like I do with all my friends. We were in a group but obviously no one will talk about that. Will they? When we get time, we go out for dinners and movies like normal people. The problem is that two actors in this industry can never have a normal relationship in the eyes of people. And, even if I were seeing someone, I would not talk about it.
Reportedly, Shahid Kapoor and you got quite close during the Mere Brother Ki Dulhan success party…
Shahid even reacted to this on Twitter. In fact, I should be reacting even more. It’s infuriating when all this is written about me. How can someone report about a woman so callously? Who the hell saw Shahid and me cozying up at the party? Yes, we walked into the party together, so what! After that we went to Imran Khan’s house and also for the after party. It’s normal, isn’t it? The problem with the whole system is that what is normal is made out to be something dirty. It bugs me when an issue like this is dealt with in such a derogatory manner. People said we were ‘cozying up’ together. What the hell does cozying up mean? Take a picture if we were doing anything and then we’ll talk.
So is the industry a good place to find love?
I probably don’t want to find love here. It’s very difficult to have a relationship here. You’d think it’s a private matter and that people would respect it but people don’t. The media talks about it, sensationalises it and creates misunderstandings between two people. For example, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, after they broke up, had to live that break-up in front of the world for a year. They were asked about it in chat shows and interviews. Even though they were trying to get over their relationship, people would keep asking them about it. If someone pestered me like that, I’d want to whack that person. I felt so bad for both of them. So I’ve decided it’s best not to have a relationship in the industry and if you do, just keep quiet about it.
You’re part of Yash Chopra’s next but you weren’t part of his London schedule.
The film has been broken up into four schedules. There is one in Mumbai, two in London and one in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. I’ll be part of all the other schedules. It’s just that I’m shooting for Vishalji’s film now so my London scenes will be shot later.
Reports say you play a small role of a narrator in Yashji’s film.
I am going to be part of a Yash Chopra film and that’s all that matters to me. I don’t want to talk about the film. Let’s just say there are two girls in the film. One is Katrina Kaif and the other is me.
Are you also part of Rajkumar Hirani’s next film with Ranbir Kapoor?
I have read so much about the films I’m supposed to be a part of. But I don’t want to say anything until the production house speaks about it.
But you did meet Rajkumar Hirani for a film.
I met him casually. When he saw BBB, he had called to tell me he liked my work. He asked me to come over for a chat. He is a kind man. Not many directors call and appreciate your work.
There are rumours abound of you being anorexic.
Ya, it’s a rumour. It comes and goes. There’s been no weight loss as such. I am just the way I was earlier. At that time, nobody noticed it as they didn’t have a newspaper article to think about. Now people want to scrutinise my body. I’ve always been tall and lean. It upsets me when people call me ‘anorexic,’ which is actually a mental disorder. It means one is not mentally stable. How many times have you heard of actresses being admitted to the hospital? How many times have you heard that about me? I work 16 to 17 hours and I’m totally fit. Just because I have a naturally good body, please don’t hate me.
What’s the funniest piece of gossip you’ve heard about yourself ?
When I heard that I had got engaged! I wore a ring on my marriage finger and went to watch a movie. A bunch of photographers clicked me at the theatre. No one said anything then. But a week later, I started getting all sorts of absurd congratulatory messages. That was really funny.
