How to Avoid Pile-On Friends friends, relationships, friendship, best friend, pile-on friends, privacy,

You miss your privacy, hate paying for all the dinners that this ‘friend’ tags along to and are annoyed to bits by her behaviour. But out of politeness and lack of a proper solution, you just gulp your irritation and flash that canned smile. Stop putting up with such friends. Spot them right on next time you are leaving for a movie date. You certainly don’t want her butting in while you’re cozying up with your date.

The leech

She sticks to you like a leech; following you everywhere you go and believes in spending as much time with you as possible. She not only insists on accompanying you on your shopping trips and dates, but also spends a lot of time hanging out at your place.

The tag-along and borrowerDoes this friend borrow everything from money to clothes, bags to books, stamps to a pinch of salt? Does he/she tag along with you to restaurants, pubs and movies, and leaves the bill for you every time? This sort of friend not only tests your patience, but is also a drain on your finances.

The attention-seekerShe just tags along with you to get all the attention she can. A loner otherwise, she knows that being seen with you is the easiest way to get noticed.

How to dump the pile-ons
• You can avoid pile-on friends by giving appropriate excuses.
• If excuses don’t drive home the point, then explain kindly but firmly that you don’t appreciate such pile-on behaviour.
• If still, she insists on continuing with this sort of behaviour, then you have to be blunt and address the issue in a crisp, precise way.

And if these don’t help, you have to work out some other way if you really want to continue being friends with this person.
