How and why: Now this guy was a serial stalker. He had been in and out of the police dragnet since 2005 for making obscene phone calls to actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Deepti Naval and Poonam Dhillon. He was re-arrested in 2009 when he started making threatening phone calls and sending lewd SMSes to Minissha.
Result: Minissha registered an FIR with the Versova police. He was arrested and was booked under section 509 and 507 of the IPC.
Vidya Balan
Stalked by: Unknown man
How and why: This guy had been following Vidya to her film sets and even to her building for a long time. But apparently his obsession grew after the release of The Dirty Picture. Things took an ugly turn when he managed to go to Vidya’s flat.
Result: Vidya called the police but didn’t file a complaint. The cops left him with just a warning.
Dia Mirza
Stalked by: 30-something doctor
How and why: He had been a harmless stalker and crazily in love with Dia for over six years until one day he showed up at her doorstep with a bouquet and a wedding ring!
Result: Dia was so freaked out that she had to lodge a complaint with the Khar Police station to prevent him from going overboard again.
Stalked by: Vastavikta Pandit, daughter of yesteryear actor Raj Kumar.
How and why: Her obsession started about nine months ago when she moved next to Shahid’s building on Yari Road. She became so neurotic that she started claiming that she is Shahid’s wife. From scaling his building walls and following him to shoots to sending him several SMSes a day, she did it all.
Result: Shahid recently filed a police complaint against her for harassment.
Gwenyth Paltrow
Stalked by: Dante Michael Soiu, 51-year-old pizza deliveryman
How and why: Dante used to leave hundreds of letters (some of which were sexually graphic), and presents outside her parents’ home. He was ‘madly’ in love with the Shakespeare in Love star. He was declared legally insane by Judge Robert O'Neill.
Result: He was sent to a high-security psychiatric hospital in California.
Catherine Zeta-Jones
Stalked by: Dawnette Knight
How and why: She was obsessed with Catherine's husband Michael Douglas, so much so that she used to send threatening letters to the actress claiming that she would cut her up and feed her to dogs!
Result: She was captured and after a much-publicised trial she was sentenced to three years in prison.
John Lennon
Stalked by: Mark David Chapman
How and why: One morning in 1980, Mark travelled to New York with the intention of killing John Lennon. He murdered the former Beatles singer after becoming obsessed with him and then obsessed with killing him. Apparently, David fired five shots at him – four of which hit Lennon’s back and shoulder.
Result: He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
