With passing away of Naveen Nischol in the annals of history after his death today, Hindi cinema has indeed become poor, as he was one of the finest actors, belonging to an era where handsome face was the basic criteria to become an actor.

Right from the time when he made his debut along with Rekha in SAWAN BHADON to a theatre actor in KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, Naveen Nischol was one actor who gave a finesse of performance through his various roles. Being able to survive during the times of the likes of Dharmendra, Rajinder Kumar etc., all and to be able to have an innings of more than 40 years, though a career characterized by highs and lows, was underlining motif of his film career. He was probably an actor who never formed a part of the so-called camps and therefore could not act in large number of films which otherwise he might have, if he had been.

He was fortunate enough to have some of the most hummable songs of Hindi cinema being picturised on him including 'Tum Jo Mil Gaye ho' from HANSTE ZAKHM, 'Raat Kali Ek Khwab mein aayee' from BUDDHA MIL GAYA. Besides, he was one of the earliest stars who formed a part of the ensemble cast, of what came to be known as the multi-star cast film, and during this era he had acted in scores of films, this chapter in his life starting from DHUND, through HINDUSTAN KI KASAM, VICTORIA NO. 203, etc. all.

He had an interesting working relationship with Amitabh Bachchan, it starting with DESH PREMEE, where he was a lead actor along with Big B, but subsequently when he acted with Big B in MAJOR SAAB, his role had been reduced. As a character artist, however, his swan song was KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, the transformation that he brought in the portrayal of a theatre actor into a business tycoon, indeed was one of the major achievements of his acting career.

It also is pertinent to point out that he never looked convincing in a role that portrayed a character who was at the fringe of the society, and this could be one of the reasons why he did not get enough roles to display his prowess.

In his passing away, though, Hindi cinema has lost one of its most debonair actors who graced the silver screen. May his soul rest in peace.
