Life often throws us into situations that are unpleasant and unwanted, such as a bad job, an alcoholic spouse or an unhappy marital life. However, we always have a choice of fight or flight. Admittingly, it is an incredibly daunting task to give up all that you have and walk into an unknown space. But with the hope that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, there are people who take the risk and dare to explore the other side.

Career switch
For 14 years, going on Income Tax raids to people’s homes was Rashmi Uday Singh’s core job as a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax. Now, she’s a renowned food critic and author with 28 books to her credit. “The sheer act of switching itself was exhilarating. From being well-known to becoming faceless, I had to start all over again. But therein lay the challenge. Besides, I hated going on Income Tax raids, and I also wanted more time with my young son, which was becoming increasingly difficult.” She’d been writing on food during her stint as an IT official, but it was a call from Meenakshi Shedde (from the Times group) to start their weekly food column for the Independent that changed everything. “Over the years, she’d been reading my work, since I had studied journalism and trained with The Times in 1974-75.” Rashmi advises, “I would recommend a second innings to anyone who feels even the slightest tug to do so. Don't be afraid to take the plunge and remember that you have to be prepared to leave one shore and not be able to see another for a long time.

Taking that step
It’s common knowledge that relationships are complicated, but when they begin to fall apart, one doesn’t always have the courage to call it quits. When Sheena Mishra* delivered her baby girl, her husband suggested she get rid of her. Tired of his unrelenting extra-marital pursuits in the past, she had hoped this would change things, but to no avail. “He and his family didn’t even bother to come and see the baby; I was heart-broken. I decided that I will raise my girl no matter what. I took up a job and managed all my domestic responsibilities on my own.”

The most difficult thing in such a situation is taking that first step. “It was a tough decision to let everything go; all those years of being with a family, but I have never regretted my decision. I was determined to give my girl a life filled with happiness.”
Sometimes, we are unaware of our innermost strength and hence lack the courage needed in such situations. We let things and people in our periphery take more importance than ourselves and suffer till it gets unbearable. “I kept quiet for very long, because I never knew I had so much strength. I’d encourage all those women out there to let go of their fears and take that leap towards a happier life,” concludes Sheena.

EXPERT SPEAK
Women are biologically more prone to depression and anxiety, so here are some cues on how to deal with the changes:
1) Begin your second innings with a positive, ‘can-do’ attitude.
2) Have an open mind with an eagerness to learn.
3) Some anxiety is normal; try to take challenges in your stride.
4) Look after yourself: exercise, sleep well and eat healthy.
5) Pursue your hobbies.
6) Surround yourself with family and friends. Develop new friendships too.
7) Use past experience to your advantage and let go of the traumatic ones, if any.
8) Manage your emotions and seek professional help if you need to.
