Here are a few such cases that make us say, 'OMG! Miracles really do happen!'
A rod in the head
In a case of rash driving, then 30-year-old clerk from Mathura, Bhuvaneshwar, suffered a head injury that was fatal. He was riding home on his motorcycle when he was hit from behind by a vehicle and fell upon an iron rod on the road. His skull was pierced by the 10-inch-rod, which passed through the middle of his skull, between his eyes. He was immediately rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
No hope, right? Well, the clerk was operated on for 12 hours and he not only survived but he was soon back to normal. In a case where life would have been the matter of concern, wondering what bothered the doctors? Food!
As per an IANS report, M.C. Misra, chief of the AIIMS trauma centre, said, "As his face and skull are damaged, we are finding it difficult to feed him, especially solid food. We are planning to make an incision to feed him properly. Till then, he's being fed intravenously (feeding liquid substances directly into a vein)."
Skull in hand but alive
You’ve heard that the skull is the most important bone protecting your brain. But what if we told you there was actually someone who survived holding a part of his skull in his hand?
The case occurred in Calcutta when electrician Sambhu Roy's skull fell off after he got an electric shock while repairing a high voltage wire, and suffered severe burns.
It was soon noticed that a part of his skull was loosening due to lack of blood supply, and he was actually holding that part in his hands.
However, surgeon Ratan Lal Bandyopadhyay who monitored him, stated that the skull's inner covering and the membrane which helps produce bone were "miraculously unaffected", allowing fresh bone to grow.
As per a report, "When the skull came off, I thought he will die," Bandyopadhyay told Reuters, "but we noticed a new covering on his head forming and that might have pushed the 'dead skull' out."
No cerebellum, still standing!
Here's a case that put some of the finest medical professionals in a dilemma! 3-year-old Chase Britton has been surviving without a cerebellum (the part of the brain responsible for motor control, balance, coordination, emotional control among other functions) and what’s even more shocking is that ultrasound results prove that his cerebellum was present during his development phase.
So while the medical world is struggling to find conclusions, the little boy seems to be quite relaxed. His mother Heather Britton told AOL News, "He’s happy. We call him the Little Gremlin. He loves to play tricks on people. He loves to sing. His goal in life is to make people smile."
A brand new face
Can you imagine the pain you would experience if your most loved one harmed you? Connie Culp had her face literally torn apart from a gun shot, by her own husband Thomas Culp. The shot smashed her nose, cheek and jaw and took away her ability to see, smell or even smile.
She survived but was left with a face that hid a nose and that would always get stares each time she walked the streets.
However, after being America’s first face transplant patient, Connie now has a new face, thanks to a donor. "I don't have little kids coming up saying, 'Eww, there's a monster,'" Culp said. "They think I'm amazing. I'm just normal, but we need more people like the donors to help people."
Held together by 7 rods
She was 17 when she went through the worst days of her life. Katrina Burgess suffered an accident that punctured both her lungs, broke her neck, her pelvis, her left leg and several ribs. The teenager was travelling towards her home town of Weymouth, Dorset, when the fateful accident happened.
As per a Daily Mail report doctors predicted Katrina would never walk again. But after a series of operations, this girl is not just walking, she has already been signed up by a modelling agency. Kudos to her for her courage!
Life after death?
What would you say to a patient declared dead coming to life again! That’s what happened with Val Thomas, who suffered from two heart attacks and had no brain waves for over 17 hours.
While she was kept on a ventilator as her family discussed organ donation, Val woke up in 10 minutes and started talking again. That’s not all! According to Fox News, when doctors tried to check if anything was wrong with her, they found nothing amiss.
