Whether you’ve noticed it or not, colour affects our lives in a number of ways. Colours can make us feel better, increase our energy or even have a depressing effect. Marketeers use colour to sell products and food arranged in a colourful way enhances aesthetic appeal and also our appetites. The study of colour healing or chromotherapy has been used for centuries to help heal disorders of the mind, body and soul. Each colour resonates to a different frequency and brings with it specific healing properties eg green and blue are soothing colours.
Even if you don’t have access to a colour therapist you can still use colour to help you, here are a few tips:
1. The next time you're at a fast food restaurant look around at the decor. The colors are bright, cheery and fun. Bright colors such as red, orange and yellow have been proven to stimulate the nervous system and increase your appetite. And if you have a fussy eater for a child, serve him his meals on brightly-coloured plates and offer more red, orange or yellow meals. Pink, according to studies suppresses the appetite and reduces the urge to snack. Pink plates and food? Or a pink cloth on your dining table? Think about it!
2. If you have a busy day coming up and you need to feel energized, wear orange. If you desire to give off an air of power and strength, wear black. Grey suggests a neutral bent of mind, great for mediation and if you don’t want to take sides.
3. Yellow enhances concentration, memory and self confidence. Place something yellow in your study room and write your notes on a yellow writing pad.
4. Blue and Green are natural calmers, doing up bedrooms in pastel shades of blue and green help to absorb stress and promote restful sleep. Excellent for hyperactive kids as well.
5. Too much Brown and Maroon can depress you, though excellent as grounding shades, remember to balance these shades with neutral or pastel shades.
