Officer involved in crash hours after award, cops award, crash award , award for cops

An unidentified man was fatally shot Saturday night outside an ATM near a busy midtown intersection, according to Savannah-Chatham police.
About 7:30 p.m., metro police and paramedics were alerted about a shooting in front of a freestanding Bank of America ATM near the intersection of 72nd Street and Waters Avenue. When they arrived they found a man who was gravely injured by at least one gunshot wound.
He was taken by MedStar ambulance less than a half mile away to Memorial University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, said Gena Moore, metro police spokeswoman.
As of late Saturday, details on the shooting remained limited as metro police Violent Crimes detectives, forensics technicians and police dogs combed the vicinity of the scene for clues.
An older Ford Ranger pickup was seen running and parked next to the ATM where police said the shooting occurred. Moore said investigators would not say if the incident involved a robbery.
Employees at a neighboring gas station at the intersection of DeRenne and Waters avenues said they heard nothing of the shooting until police arrived.
The man's death was the 18th homicide reported to Savannah-Chatham authorities this year - eight less than the same time period the year before.
Officer involved in crash hours after receiving award
A Savannah-Chatham police officer wrecked his patrol car on the same day he was commended for his efforts during the Imperial Sugar disaster, the department says.
But Metro officer Morris Monday was not at fault in the Wednesday collision, Moore said.
Monday was patrolling a stretch of Ogeechee Road west of Quacco Road in his marked Ford Crown Victoria when a van pulled out in front of him, Moore said.
Surprisingly, Monday was not seriously injured; he and one person in the van were taken to area hospitals, Moore added.
The crash was severe enough for patrol officers to request metro's major accident investigative team.
"It's amazing no one was seriously injured," Moore said. "It definitely looked bad."
Earlier that day, Monday was recognized by metro Chief Willie Lovett for being one of the first to help the victims of the Imperial Sugar blast in February 2008.
Along with helping rescuers triage victims, Monday also drove an ambulance to ease the stress on overwhelmed paramedics, officials at the awards ceremony noted.
Moore added the plaque Monday received from the chief was destroyed in the crash, but a new one has since been ordered.
Long County man stabbed to death
Long County Detectives and the GBI are investigating the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old man on Friday night.
A Long County Sheriff's Office report said Denzel Richardson was stabbed during a fight at Time Saver Convenience store.
The report said a deputy responded around 11 p.m to a report of a fight at the store on State Route 196 near the Long-Tattnall County Line and found Richardson.
Richardson, suffering from a wound to his chest, was unconscious when Middleton arrived, and was being attended by a paramedic and an unidentified friend, according to the report.
Richardson was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective Nicky Anderson, who is investigating the incident, said Richardson got into an altercation with a group of individuals at the store.
Anderson declined to describe the dispute that led to the altercation, but said it had been ongoing for several months.
He said Richardson, who lived nearby, was stabbed once in the chest.
Anderson said Daniel Williams, 20, was questioned about the stabbing and faces further questioning, but has not been charged with a crime.
Williams, who also lives in the area, told police he went to the convenience store to get cigarettes and change for his mother, Anderson said.
