How to Resist Midnight Bingeing

You hardly eat out and are a regular at the gym. But you still don't seem to be losing those extra kilos. Late night snacking could be the culprit.  Did you know that a night snack can lead to weight gain? This is because the body's metabolism slows down by night. So instead of breaking down what you’ve eaten, the body converts it to fat.  Giving up on late night snacking could be the answer to reach your weight loss goal sooner.

Easier said than done? Here are some tips to resist late night bingeing.

Eat Your Fill
Fill your stomach during the day. Munch on salads, nuts and other low-cal foods. Eat small meals frequently. This will keep you full for longer. Eat a filling dinner so that you don’t feel hungry later.

Brush Your Teeth
It may sound funny, but it works. Brush your teeth two hours after dinner. Now you won't want to eat anything after you’ve brushed, will you?

Avoid These Temptations
If you are going for an after-dinner drive, take an alternate route that doesn't require you to pass by your favourite coffee shop, ice cream parlour or dessert place. You will be tempted to have a bite. Also steer clear of the fridge, food cabinet... you get the drift.

Call a Friend
Distract yourself if you are really, really tempted. Call a friend and share some gossip. Talking will distract you and take your mind off food. You could also play with your kids, talk to your spouse or get on to some pending chores.

Curb Mindless Eating
You are watching TV and your mind wanders to a jar of chocolate chip cookies. You run to the cookie jar and before you know it’s empty and you’re on a guilt trip! Resist the temptation by sipping on some green tea or munch on something healthy like a carrot stick. Avoid eating while you’re reading or watching TV. You always tend to eat more than you should when you’re brain is focused on something else. Will power will keep your mind from wandering.

Drink Instead
If you really cannot fight off the temptation, drink something. A few drinks you can have before bed time are herbal tea, water, unsweetened fruit juice and milk. These will chase those hunger pangs away.

Sleep on Time

Staying up late, takes up energy. As a result, your body craves for food. Sleep on time so that you don’t eat post dinner and so that the food you’ve eaten is digested properly.
