What to Consider When Switching Careers

ALT
You are at that stage in your life where you feel you are not doing what you really want to do. As a result, you decide it is time for a change in career. However, you can’t take the plunge without some serious thought.

According to Vineet Bhatia, an HR consultant, switching careers involves a lot of planning and management, financially as well as in other aspects.

Here are some things you should keep in mind when switching careers.

Qualifications
The first thing you need to check is whether your new career choice requires you to acquire any new qualifications. This is important before you send out your CV for prospective jobs. According to Bhatia, you may just need to do a small crash course. “In other cases, an entirely new degree or diploma is called for. It helps to do your homework,” he says.

Experience
Employers prefer to hire people with experience. If you are making a drastic career switch, in all probability, you may not have this experience. Find out what experience is needed in the new field and see if any of your past work experience can qualify.

Money
Making a career switch may mean starting at the bottom and working your way up all over again. This implies that you won’t be paid a lot of money, at least initially. It is a good idea to start saving in advance and planning your finances efficiently. This money will then take care of you until you get into the big league again.

Prospects
You are changing careers because your present field does not offer you what you want. Does it make sense to jump into a new field without finding out what it has to offer you? Check out the future prospects in your new career so that you will not be settling for something that’s going to make you stagnate. Bhatia recommends talking to friends who have been in the new field in addition to doing some basic research.

A career switch can be an exciting proposition that can change the course of your life. However, you need to get all the basics sorted out before making the jump
