Ekta Kappor's tryst with dark theme-oriented thrillers continues and latest cinematic scary demon to arrive on the silver screen is RAGINI MMS. Touted to be scariest 'date' flick till date in Hindi filmdom, it paints black the shady world of voyeurism and comes out in the format of sensuously delivered paranormal thriller. Ekta's previous flicks entertained us with its musical delights but RAGINI MMS, a realistically delivered horrifying flick has least to offer with just four soundtracks (two old tracks and two original soundtracks) in its audio packaging. Let's hope that all these four soundtracks add fuel 'n' fire to the pacing of this bizarrely pitched thriller. So let's get started...by plugging 'play' to the soundtracks! Optimistically speaking, Ekta Kapoor should be lauded for not adulterating the sensuous feel of yesteryear's hit number 'Raat Akeli Hai' (JEWEL THIEF -1967), as it sparkles again with its original version. It has the Asha Bhonsle's mischievousness in it with Majrooh Sultanpuri's engaging lyrics making seductive impact in S.D. Burman's appealing composition. The song had intimidating sensual impact in 60's when Tanuja in white gown made seductive moves on evergreen Dev Anand and now its RAGINI MMS turn to make vibrant jesters on big screen. Will it or will it not...just wait for the D-Day! Intoxicating flare of jazz comes out as the flavor of the first original soundtrack 'Itne kareeb aao', a sensuously pitched duet that has breezy vocals coupled with impressive arrangements to entice young listeners. Raaj's penetrative oozing voice mellows the proceeding in its varying tones and appeals to perfection. In the musical backdrop, the song has beautiful amalgam of seductive feminine chorals that allures well with relaxing jazz arrangements. Virag Mishra's simple lyrics fit the occasion and so does Shamir Tandon's impressive composition in making this a worthy contribute to the album. Horrifying images of RAGINI MMS becomes clearer and clearer as the haunting spells of frightening musical appeal grows louder with daunting set of vocals in the soundtrack 'Ragini'. New talents Faizan Hussain and Agnel Boman make this a riveting horror musical show with their grueling voices colliding aggressively with petrifying sounds, ear-splitting arrangements that also constitute crazy hip-hop emceeing, exuding out the gist of the flick. It comes out to be strictly background score type of soundtrack, well suited for horrifying moments or for ending/beginning titles of the film. Bappi Lahiri's disco-dhamaka was quite a riot in 80's and 90's, the raunchiest of his work 'You are my Chicken Fry' (ROCK DANCER -1995) makes its way with 'club-remix tadka' in 'You are my Chicken Fry (remix)'. In 1995, the original version came out as routine love duet (choreographed on Kamal Sadanah and Ritu Shivpuri) but now this snazziest version rocks out as promotional feature to promote this paranormal thriller. It has original voices of Bappi Lahiri and Shweta Shetty but the tempo is stupendously accelerated to make booty shaking on floors. In present era of erratic and rowdily written songs, this 'eatery-specialist' number by lyricist Indeevar might create stir but the musical buzz is substantially mediocre. RAGINI MMS is a situational sounding mediocre album with nothing spectacular to offer in its audio packaging. The highlight of the album is cool jazz number 'Itne kareeb aao' while 'Ragini' plays strictly to the horrifying needs of the flick. S.D Burman's 'Raat Akeli Hain' is already a huge hit among old listeners while Bappi da's 'You are my chicken fry (remix)' is a mediocre sounding massy number. In horror films and paranormal thrillers like RAGINI MMS, music has always taken backseat, and this time too, it plays a side-kick. Rating - 2/5
