How to Look and Act When Meeting His Parents

The thought of meeting your boyfriend’s parents might be very scary for a lot of women. While for some it can be both exciting and promising. But you need to know that this meeting will be a huge milestone in your relationship. Such a meeting gets in positive vibes that your guy is confident about the future of your relationship.

As intimidating as the meeting may seem, it might be a deal-breaker if the parents do not like you. Getting stressed out is the most common feeling a woman gets when she realises that the people his future man holds in high regard, disregards you.

There are some very simple ways to go about the perfect first impression that can take you a long way.

1. Study about them
It is likely that you would know a lot about his parents considering the fact that he would have mentioned the basics about them. But it will be a pleasant surprise for them if you know a little about them like, where they were raised, what college they went to, etc. Show interest in them and ask questions about their jobs, hobbies, and other interests.

2. Pick the right clothes
You should decide well in advance as to what you would be wearing on your big day. If you feel you don’t have anything, do not mind to shell out a few extra bucks to look good but please do not go over the top.
Avoid wearing clothes that you need to constantly adjust or fidget with, and that are too tight or constricting.

3. Give them a gift

You are surely going to win a few brownie points if you gift them something. Anything as simple as a box of chocolates, a bottle of wine or even a plant can do the trick. This makes an immediate and lasting warm impression on his parents.

4. Be ready to answer
You should be prepared that you will be asked a lot of questions. Don’t lose your patience as this is a very obvious and natural process for all parents (be it your boyfriends or your friends). You can expect some basic questions about where you work or about your college and schooling, and also about your plans for the future. Such personal questions can be answered with a polite but generic response, or you may choose to let your boyfriend respond to such questions.

5. Offer to help
You should try and help when you get a chance for the same. If your boyfriend’s mother is in the kitchen, ask her if she needs any help and try to be of help. But make sure you don’t over-do it. Just be naturally nice.

6. When siblings are present
Siblings should also be treated politely and with respect, and you should make an effort to include them in conversations when appropriate. You should be prepared with a few general questions for them as well.
