Sri Lanka bat as they chase clean sweep, srilanka cricket news, australia cricket news, srilanka australia cricket series

Australia will bowl first as they attempt to avoid a record eighth consecutive loss in the dead rubber against Sri Lanka at the Gabba. The visitors, who won the toss, sealed the three-match series with their win on Friday and Kumar Sangakkara's men will be pushing for a clean sweep as they continue to develop for next year's World Cup.

Kumar Sangakkara celebrates after his fine catch to remove Michael Clarke, Australia v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Melbourne

The hosts have lost seven matches in all forms of the game - their last win was the opening Test against Pakistan in July - and will play without Ricky Ponting, who is resting ahead of Tasmania's Sheffield Shield game on Wednesday. Callum Ferguson comes in for Ponting while Xavier Doherty, the spinner who got four wickets on debut in Melbourne, replaces Nathan Hauritz. Peter Siddle also has a game off, with the left-armer Mitchell Starc given his second ODI.
Sri Lanka made two changes by bringing in Jeevan Mendis and Dilhara Fernando and resting Nuwan Kulasekara and Muttiah Muralitharan. The decision means Murali played his final game in Australia during the series-sealing victory in Sydney. The conditions are clear and warm and the pitch has only a hint of green.
