The 12th-year veteran, who admittedly came to camp out of shape, told reporters before gametime that he hoped to be back in the lineup for Wednesday night's home game against Oklahoma City.
"I was able to play in the preseason and just keep building and getting my legs back to where I needed them to be coming into the season. I thought I was building a strong foundation. But my knee is always going to be a little problem. It probably just needed some rest.
"I didn't expect for this to happen and didn't expect not to play tonight. I'm disappointed, but there's nothing I can do about it Hopefully it's just a one-game thing and I'll be ready for Wednesday."
Eric Bledsoe will make his first NBA start in his place, because backup point guard Randy Foye is sidelined with a left hamstring strain that occurred during Saturday's practice. So the timing is particularly brutal for the Clippers, whose 99-83 loss to Dallas on Sunday at Staples Center began a stretch of five games in seven nights.
"I definitely want to be 100 percent when I'm out there. I don't feel like I've been 100 percent yet," Davis said. "The thing about my knee is, if you go back to the days in Golden State, you'll see that I missed games in the middle of the season because I had to get swelling cartilage taken out of my knee. That's just a problem that I've had from having an injury like this for the 12 years of my NBA career.
"I think this summer was a dose of reality, as far as maybe starting a little bit ahead of time - of just train differently," Davis added. "I had always trained a certain way, and that didn't really work for me this time the way it usually worked for me throughout my career. Getting in shape was never a problem for me, but now my knee is kind of flaring up and having these kind of nagging injuries has really taught me a lesson."
