The actor takes on Aisha saying it was only about clothes and lambasts SRK and Shahid Kapoor for promoting racism
Abhay Deol is not happy that he was a part of Aisha, also starring Sonam Kapoor. He feels the movie had more to do with clothes than acting. The actor, who was missing in action during the promotions of the movie and its release, fuelled rumours that he was dissatisfied about how the film had turned out. However, he had never spoken out about this. It was also speculated that his relationship with Anil Kapoor, the producer of the movie, had soured. For the first time, Abhay opens up to BT on all this.
"The movie had nothing to do with Jane Austen's Emma as it was reported. When I was shooting, I realised that the film was more about clothes than actual acting. I even read reviews of the movie that praised the clothes. I would like to say today that I will never ever be part of a film like Aisha in my lifetime. It's not the kind of film I'd like to do," said a visibly agitated Abhay.
The acclaimed character actor was also in the mood to take on stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Shahid Kapoor, who are endorsing fairness products. He also lashed out at all the celebrities who have endorsed them before. "I request my fraternity to not endorse such products as it only promotes racism. We are racists and still believe in the caste divide. Instead of spreading the message that we are best in whichever skin we are born with, these ads are trying to make people what they are not. With big stars promoting this concept, people are thinking that it's not right to be dark skinned," Abhay tells us.
He adds, "Internationally, we are dark skinned and people look at us as dark. No matter how many fairness products one uses, a dark person will remain dark. The West finds our skin attractive and exotic. Some of our best leading ladies have been dark and have been enormously successful. These current advertisements only add to one's inferiority complex towards dark complexion. We should aim to stop selling such products that encourage division in society."
