Kiribath: Kiribath is essentially a traditional milk and rice preparation. The dish is made by cooking rice with coconut milk. During the Sinhalese New Year, Kiribath is served as one of the sweet dishes.
Mallum: Sri Lankans eat a lot of Mallung, which is more like a green salad and prepared by mixing shredded veggies, onions, coconut and some basic spices for garnishing.
Tamarind fish curry: Fish lovers must try the tamarind fish curry which is a Sri Lankan speciality. The main ingredients of this dish are coconut, tamarind and the Sri Lankan curry powder which is a mixture of dried roasted spices. Enjoy it with steamed rice.
Hoppers: Fermented rice flour, coconut milk and a dash of palm toddy are mixed to prepare a fermented batter. It is then left to rise and cooked in a wok. There are several types of hoppers – egg, milk, string and a couple of sweeter varieties.
Lamprais: This Sri Lankan dish is influenced by Dutch cuisine. It is prepared by cooking rice in stock with a curry, along with meatballs. All this is then wrapped in a banana leaf and baked.
