You may have appeared for a dozen job interviews, but each attempt feels like it is the first time, isn't it? When a job, and more importantly your career is on the line, you need to think twice. Here's how to nail a job interview, especially if it is conducted over the phone.
Mind your language: Ensure you’re absolutely fluent in the requisite language. Most of us believe that we are good with it, but pay a little attention to how you speak, and you’ll notice that most of the time you’re saying ‘this thing’, ‘that thing’, ‘you know’ and ‘stuff like that’. Fluency not only means the ability to converse, but to communicate using the right words.
Avoid speaking too fast: Make sure you don't talk too fast during a phone interview. If you end up speaking too fast without any pauses, you are likely to confuse the interviewer. The purpose of language is to communicate effectively. So if you hear him/her say 'sorry' frequently, you need to slow down girl.
Know your words: What is the difference between presume and assume? Knowing which words are appropriate for a certain purpose shows depth and clarity in thought. And this is something that comes through only when you talk, not from your CV.
Tune into your tone: Keep your tone pleasant and moderately pitched. We normally don’t realise how loud we are (or how squeaky, at times.) Also remember not to mask your voice during the interview. Don’t try to ‘sound’ a particular way. It doesn’t work and in the attempt you end up confused and nervous. Just ensure you don’t get too loud or too excited.
What NOT to say: Remember to greet and add 'sir' or 'ma'am' as the case may be. Always listen first, and then talk. If you want something to be repeated, never go 'Huh?' or 'What?'. It’s always 'sorry', 'pardon' or 'excuse me'. And remember to smile when you’re on the phone, the listener will hear it in your voice.
