If there's one thing that excites us, it's make up. After all, it can really make or break your look. But with trends changing almost every day, how do you know what products to buy and what not to? Well, if you are thinking of updating your make up kit, we have just what you need. Smita Baishakhia from Colorbar Cosmetics shares her tips on how to buy make up.
1) The first thing to do when buying cosmetics is to make sure that they are hypoallergenic (do not cause any allergy), non-comedogenic (do not cause any breakouts), dermatologically-tested. This way, no matter what your skin type is, you will not have any untoward skin eruption or reaction.
2) It's important that the make up you purchase has caring and curing ingredients. For instance, ingredients like Vitamin E and chamomile in make up help protect the skin and slow down the ageing process. Onion extracts have curing properties while hyaluronic acid is a great moisturising and line-filling agent.
3) Indian skin has predominantly a warm undertone. That's why you must choose products that have a warm undertone ie a yellow, orange or red base. Products that have a cool undertone tend to turn blue or grey after a while of wearing them. Remember, the same shade of nail paint can have a warm and a cool undertone so it can be quite tricky. Ask a beauty advisor at the make up counter to guide you. After a while, you'll learn to tell the difference on your own. However, as a rule, shades of gold always look better on darker skin than silver or pearly white.
4) Often a product that looks really lust-worthy might land up untouched in your make up kit. That's why it's important to take the help of the beauty advisor at the make up counter. He/ she can advise you on the right products for your skin type keeping in mind the latest trends.
5) All products have a certain shelf life; after that need to be binned. Eye products like mascara can be kept for about eight months to a year while lipsticks can be used for much longer ie upto 36 months. Powder make up like eye shadows, compacts and loose powders have a long shelf life too. However, cream-based products last only for about 24 months or so. That's why you should avoid buying products in bulk in the hope that you will use them. Pick a few quality products instead that you know you will use regularly.
6) If you plan to buy a product, whether it is mascara or foundation, make sure you know how to apply it. The application can make all the difference. You can always ask the beautician at your local parlour or even the girl at the make up counter in a mall. Many malls offer to do your make up for free if you are buying a few products and some do it even you aren't.
7) Just because coral pink lipstick is the in thing, doesn't mean it will suit you. Test the products before you buy. As your eyes and lips are slightly darker than the rest of your face, you can try eye pencils, shadows and lip colours on your wrist. However, face products like concealers, foundations and compacts must be tried on the lighter inner part of your hand. If your skin is not sensitive, directly apply eye and lip products using a disposable applicator. Face products can be tested on your jaw line.
8) Avoid going make up shopping when you are tired, suffering from a breakout or have just returned from a holiday. Make sure your skin is well rested and free from a tan. This way you won't go wrong with the shades you pick.
9) Keep an eye out for two in one cosmetics. They fall a lot cheaper in the long run. For instance, Colorbar's chubby lipsticks do the work of a lipstick and a lip liner. Similarly, Maybelline's BB cream works as a foundation, sun block and moisturiser.
10) Create your own make up mood board. This means you mix and match several products to find the perfect look. For instance, did you know that a bright orange lipstick, gold eye shadow and brown mascara go well with electric blue nail paint? Unless you mix and match, you'll never really find the perfect look. So buy make up for a complete look rather than bits and pieces that you might never land up using.
