Drama Queen Aditi Rao Hydari

From a blink-and-you-miss her role in Delhi 6 to being the leading lady in Goldie Behl’s recent London Paris New York(LPNY) has been quite a leap. No wonder Aditi Rao Hydari calls herself Benjamin Button (who reverses his growth in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) when it comes to the characters she has portrayed on screen.Whatever it may be, Aditi Rao is living her dream right now.

LPNY may not be a runway hit. But it’s done enough to put the focus on Aditi. So here we are sitting in her living room, giggling like school girls. Dressed in loose denim dungarees, hair pulled back in a bun, she’s a picture of innocence. Her exuberance is infectious. She simply can’t stop talking and has me enthralled. She confides she’s still testing waters as an actress. Her excitement to see herself on screen is palpable.

Aditi’s maternal grandfather J Rameshwar Rao was the Raja of Wanaparthy in Andhra Pradesh while her paternal grandfather Sir Akbar Hydari was the Prime Minister of Hyderabad State. She reveals that her family owns one of India’s biggest publishing houses, Orient Blackswan. She also tells me that Aamir Khan’s wife Kiran Rao is her first maternal cousin. The sisters, though very fond of each other, hardly meet given their hectic schedules.

Aditi made her acting debut in 2007 with Sharada Ramanathan’s acclaimed Tamil film Sringaram, but it was her character roles in Delhi 6 and more recently, Rockstar, which got her recognition. Her performances were catalytic in getting her the lead role in LPNY opposite Ali Zafar. Post LPNY, life has definitely changed. “Now people offer me lead roles. It feels good. You don’t have to worry that your role will be edited out as you do while playing character roles. I have had past experiences where I was signed on for a meaty role and finally it was shortened. I do know that editing is part of the filmmaking process. I trust my directors. But you still get upset after you’ve put in a lot of effort.”

Currently, Aditi is busy soaking in all the attention. “It’s not a clothes-tearing response but people have come and asked for my pictures on flights. They tell me they love my work. Boys are very sweet.” The actress states that she is looking forward to a time when she’ll be mobbed. “Everyone wants to be a rock star at some point. Who doesn’t?”

LPNY may not have exactly singed the box-office but the undeniable chemistry between the pair was evident on screen and off it too. Pat comes the reply, “We got along well and supported each other during the promotions. I used to wear heels so Shrishti (Arya, producer) told me to just grab Ali’s arm and walk. People noticed the comfort level we shared. Ali is quite easy to get along with. He is chilled out.” Her comfort with Ali became quite discomforting when she called him ‘a good harami’ during the film’s promotions. “I am such a kaddu (pumpkin), you know. In Hyderabad they say harami just like that. For me it means badmash (naughty). I guess I’m not abreast with Hindi gaalis (abuses).”

According to the grapevine, the much married Ali (he’s married to Ayesha Fazli) is more than a good friend to Aditi. “Really?”, she asks incredulously. “That’s said all the time. That’s why people keep their friendships under wraps as it invites so much speculation. But if I were dating someone and am confident about it, I’ll own up.” On second thought she adds, “But out of respect for the person and myself, I’d rather not talk about such things. It would put the relationship under too much pressure. Media speculation can get nasty.”  There were also speculations that Aditi was married to lawyer-turned-actor Satyadeep Mishra (played Rani Mukerji’s boss in No One Killed Jessica). Though she refuses to elaborate on that, she acknowledges that the two are ‘best of friends’.

And much like the proverbial princess, Aditi has created quite a stir by kissing quite a few ‘froggies’ only to see them turn into Prince Charmings — of course in films. From Arunoday Singh in Yeh Saali Zindagi to Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar and now Ali Zafar in LPNY, her candour grabbed enough eyeballs. “It’s not easy to kiss in public but if you have a brilliant director and have faith in him, you go ahead. Otherwise, I won’t compromise my dignity or do anything that I am not convinced about
