Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand have great chemistry and add to the humour element.
What's not:
The story is what you have already seen a billion times before.
verdict:
Rock of Ages is decently entertaining; especially if you are a fan of 80's rock n roll. If not, the song and dance routine gets to you after a while but it is Tom Cruise who truly manages to rock the film. His metamorphosis is stunning. Watch the film for Tom Cruise. The 49-year-old still has it in him to seduce the ladies!
RATING:
Cast: Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta
Direction: Adam Shankman
Set in 1987, Rock of Ages is 'Glee' meets 'Burlesque'.
A typical feel-good musical revolving around the life of 20-somethings who come to LA, seeking fame and fortune just like their idol, Rock god of the 80's Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Fans of rock n roll worship Stacee while women find the chest-groping, eccentric heavy metal icon and his gaze intoxicating. They imagine him in slow motion all the time! However, fame and money comes with a price. Slave to rock n roll, wild sex, Stacee faces identity crisis when a reporter questions his drunken debauchery.
The story is what you have already seen a billion times before. Think of Coyote Ugly or Burlesque, small town girl Sherrie (Julianne Hough) is an archetypal aspiring singer who bumps into Drew (Diego Boneta) the moment she lands in LA. Drew, a bartender-cum-singer convinces his boss Dennis (Alec Baldwin), owner of a popular nightclub which hosts rock concerts, to employ Sherrie as a waitress. Together, they hope to make it big some day. But fame doesn't come easy.
Rock of Ages would have been just another run of the mill rock musical, if it wasn't for Tom Cruise. Cruise plays the erratic rocker with immaculate precision. He also gets the body language, attitude and singing (he does sing a bit) right. His cockiness, conversation with Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti and pet monkey 'hey man' is simply hilarious. Known for his chocolate boy good looks, Cruise does shock you with his bad boy portrayal. Even his Kohl-ed eyes manage to arrest your attention.
Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand have great chemistry and add to the humour element. They even perform a duet 'Can't Fight This Feeling' which is extremely funny. Catherine Zeta Jones is good at musicals. We've seen that in 'Chicago' already.
Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta, born in their 80's in real life, carry off the 80's look pretty well on-screen.
The film is full of popular songs from the 80's. Songs of rock bands such as Journey, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Styx have been featured. We especially liked the way the song 'I've been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life' has been shot.
Paul Giamatti is impressive as a calculative, opportunist celeb manager.
