EXPECTATIONS
Kunal Kohli's films have more often than boasted of good music. Right from Mujhse Dosti Karoge to Hum Tum and then Fanaa, his films have relied on melody. Moreover with Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra as the young 'jodi' in a film that is based in the romantic 'jodi', it is expected that music would be the mainstay of the enterprise all over again. What further makes one confident of the score in the offering is Sajid-Wajid at the helm of affairs who are going through some terrific times. With Prasoon Joshi as the lyricist, expectations soar further as you look forward to a massy soundtrack with a classy touch.
MUSIC
The expectations are more than just met with the opening track 'Mukhtasar' successfully setting the stage for the rest of the album. A winner all the way which has Western arrangements complimenting the 'desi' melody that Sajid-Wajid bring to fore here, 'Mukhtasar' is immensely catchy and is also quite eye pleasing. What also impresses it the way Wajid sings this one in a free flow and justifies the decision of bringing himself behind the mike. In fact the way he sings reminds one of many Pakistani singers who have given chartbusters in Bollywood flicks. Now add this one to the list.
The 'remix version' is done well too and even though the starting portion of the song does remind one of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's 'Tumhi Dekho Naa' [Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna], one lets it go since the music by itself is so tuneful that you want to hear what Sajid-Wajid have in the offering here.
An altogether different style of music is offered with 'Allah Jaane' which has a soulful feel to it. With Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the helm of affairs, you expect a certain outcome and thankfully he doesn't disappoint. Moving at a decent pace with no Western influence whatsoever, it is the kind of song that you can play in a loop and forget the rest. Now one looks forward to see how the song has been picturised because Prasoon's lyrics have a certain poetic feel to it and hence a lot depends upon the visual effect that Kunal Kohli brings here.
What comes next is the highlight of the album, 'Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff'. In the past there have been quite a few songs that have tried to recreate the Bollywood feel of the 60s and the 70s. While some have succeeded, many haven't. However Sajid-Wajid hit a six with 'Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff' which goes all out in reliving the era gone by. Right from the tune to the arrangements to the way the song is picturised, one can be rest assured that Shammi Kapoor would have been proud had it heard and seen the song. The ones who add that extra zing to the proceedings are Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan who fill in well for Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle and go all out in letting their hair down here. A chart-topper in the offering here.
With at least two songs so far promising to make their way up in the charts, there is another hit in the making with 'Humse Pyaar Kar Le Tu'. Yet again Wajid brings himself as a singer and renders this one entirely different from the way he had approached 'Mukhtasar'. He is complimented well by Mika Singh who adds another popular number to his names. A fun number which is all over the entertainment channels and radio stations already, 'Humse Pyaar Kar Le' is set in India the way it was 100 years ago but still the song doesn't sound outdated one bit. With an ever dependable Shreya Ghoshal roped in for the female part, the song promises a long run for itself. One can't say the same though about the 'remix version' which is an absolute distraction and really didn't have a place in the album.
Shreya is heard once again for 'That's All I Really Wanna Do' where she sings in the manner that suits Priyanka Chopra of the current times. On the same lines as the kind of soundtrack that one had heard in Anjaana-Anjaani, this fun hip-n-happening number comes towards the end of the album but isn't a pushover by any means. Yes, songs like 'Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff' and 'Mukhtasar' stay on to be hot favourites due to their 'new composition' feel but even while being a conventional composition, what with Shaan singing the way only he can, 'That's All I Really Wanna Do' does stay with you after it is through.
OVERALL
The music of Teri Meri Kahaani is all set to be a very good success, especially so since it has melody at its base and stars like Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra to further accentuate its appeal. With aggressive promotion of the album further helping its cause, Sajid-Wajid and Prasoon Joshi can be rest assured that their music would reach out to the masses in a big way and find very good appreciation. A winner!
