The Story of Healthy Sandwiches
Summer's approaching and like me, I'm sure you are also looking around for some innovative ideas to jazz up your lunches or evening snacks. Set aside the office cafeteria food and prepare your own healthy sandwich in a jiffy. If you think healthy sandwiches are just about throwing a piece of meat between two slices of brown bread, then you're wrong! Here are some easy and simple tricks to give that extra edge of creativity and taste to the humble sandwich. Try them...Your tastebuds will thank us for it later.

A Short Guide to Healthy Sandwiches

Turkey
: Sliced, diced, roasted or shaved— or go for any lean protein.
Whole grain: Go for the whole grain variety of bread, pita pocket, bun, naan, roll focaccia, cracker or English muffin.
Relish these healthy spreads: Go for low-fat refined beans, regular or hot mustard, BBQ sauce, hummus or cranberry spread.
Toppings: Name it and there are endless toppings which can help you make your sandwich healthy. Add radishes, onions, herbs, cucumber, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, chopped nuts.
Preparation method: Traditional style (layered over a bread) panini style, roll or wrap, toasted, grilled.

Here are my top two suggestions for healthy and delicious sandwiches:

Recipe Philly steak sandwich
Ingredients
  • ½ cup of thinly sliced green pepper
  • ½ cup of thinly sliced onions
  • A few pieces of shaved roast beef
  • Whole Wheat Buns
  • Shredded low fat cheese (to taste)
  • Oregano (or any seasonal herb)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method
Add one tablespoon of olive oil to a pan and place it over medium heat. Now throw in your sliced pepper and onions and sauté them lightly. Add the roasted beef and sauté it for another 2 to 5 minutes. Add a pinch of salt, pepper and oregano to the mixture. Your sandwich mixture is ready. From hot mustard to peanut butter add any kind of spread of your choice over the whole wheat bun. Place the whole wheat bun on a baking tray. Pour the mixture over the bun neatly. Top it with low fat cheese and bake it until the cheese has melted.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon of drained yogurt flavoured with tobacco and honey 

  • 2 teaspoons of hot mustard
  • 2 slices of rye bread
  • Thinly sliced ham
  • Thinly sliced red onions and sliced mushrooms

Method



Take a baking tray and neatly place the slices of rye bread on it. Mix the yogurt with the hot mustard sauce. Now spread the mustard sauce mixture over the bread evenly. Top slices of bread with ham, mushrooms and onions. Place the sandwiches in the oven for around 2 top 5 minutes till the time the bread turns slightly brown. Serve right away.
