After spending nearly a decade working as a professional magician and belly dancer, it was tough to trade in her eye-catching costumes for sensible shoes and elastic-band slacks.
"Making the costumes was always my favorite thing," de Fontes said.
So, she worked her act into her lesson plans.
"I make costumes for me and my dogs and I'm allowed to bring them to class on a regular basis for reader's th eatre," she said. "I dress the dogs up as the main characters."
Gizmo and Hershey, de Fontes' miniature dachshunds, have helped her tell fictional stories about pirates, superheroes and sports - as well as historical accounts of female nurses and industrial workers in World War II.
"They are therapy dogs," said Principal Donna Myers. "They even have school uniforms and little bookbags."
In October, de Fontes organized an after-school workshop to show students how to make and embellish Halloween costumes of their own. And de Fontes continues to perform locally, doing magic tricks and dressing in costume at "Harry Potter" movie and book release events.
"She's used some very innovative and creative activities with the children," Myers said. "It teaches them responsibility and creativity."
