Career choice
It sort of chose me. After some print modelling, I did a music video for Gulzar saab. I got noticed and was called for the audition of Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. Fortunately, it all worked out.
Outsider among insiders
I had to make my own relationships. Also, when I returned to films, I had to start all over again, which was a little difficult. But it is untrue that people have any prejudices if you're not from a film background. As long you have talent and you're good at your job, it's good enough. It gets a little tougher because you don't get as many opportunities and things are not well planned for you. But I'm happy to have come so far and people have been very good to me.
The three-year twitch
I want to state clearly that my husband had nothing to do with it! I just couldn't figure what I wanted to do at that point. It was a moment of indecision; I just wasn't ready for it. I didn't want it that bad, especially because it was so demanding. You have to be very committed to what you do, so I just thought I'll think about it. I gave it a long thought, and after three years, I knew then that this is what I wanted to do. And I'm glad I took that break; it just made things so much clearer. The kind of satisfaction that you get from this, you cannot get elsewhere. I'm very happy to be back!
Acting, a method...
There's no method or technique; I just figure it out as I'm going. I have just done five films, so what I've figured so far is trying to bring sincerity to the character; to try and become the person I'm portraying. I feel one should internalise the character because then you free yourself from any boundaries that exist. I don't think I have achieved that kind of internalisation yet, but I'm trying to get there.
Theatre or writing?
Theatre really scares me. You have to be really brave to be up there and I don't know if I can do that. You have to be really bold with your emotions and pitch it up so much more, which doesn't come easily to me. I write a bit, here and there. But I don't know if I can put that down in a script. I'm working on something; let's see how it shapes up.
The great mentor
You can do with or without one, but you definitely need some advice and guidance. Sudhir (Mishra) is my mentor and has been there for me; right from my first film. He has faith in me as an actor and that helps me to keep going. You doubt yourself, what you're doing, where you're going and where you can reach, so it's good to have people who believe in you as an actor.
Insecurities about looks
There's no choice; you have to deal with it. You have to stay fit and look after yourself. The only way to survive this is to be sure of yourself because that really helps you to get ahead.
Turning point
Coming back! I wondered if people remembered me, as both the industry and the audience, have short-term memory. I was very insecure. I was lucky to receive a call from Sanjay Suri, after which Sorry Bhai happened. There's no way you can plan these things.
Stress-busters
Just being with my family, watching a good film together or going out for a vacation where your phone doesn't work. I just went skydiving; it was a life-changing moment.
Skincare routine
If I'm not shooting, then definitely no makeup. I just put kajal on a daily basis. I keep my skin clean and use homemade face packs like papaya and besan. I avoid soap and facewash.
Style statement
Simple, classic and understated. I mostly wear casuals and like clean cuts and lines. I can't pull off blingy outfits at all. I like Oscar de la Renta; his ensembles are very classy and stylish.
