The Meeting
"We met on 2nd April 1995 at a party and some years later we found our Platinum Day of Love when our son Azaan was born! It was a friend's wedding anniversary where Aqeel was Dj-ing. I found him really cute and I hit the dance floor. Later that evening when I bumped into him, I told him what I thought of him. And I think he blushed, to which I said, 'That's all I wanted to say. Just paying you a compliment, that's all.' I meant it. I had no idea if I'd ever see him again. Three months later I was chatting with an acquaintance I couldn't wait to get away from and fortunately Aqeel walked in. In an attempt to drive my boring old company away, I greeted him like some long lost friend and muttered, 'Please save me in five minutes!' And he said, 'Why not now?'
One but different
Unfortunately we still hadn't exchanged numbers, but after a string of such chance meetings we went on our first date on 1st August that year and eventually got married. We both feel that for a strong lasting marriage you need love but also, respect. We're both strong, independent individuals busy with our work for the most part of the day. We don't keep calling each other incessantly because if you don't give each other space, boredom sets in very quick. It's amazing how we have completely different lifestyles- he's a night person and I'm a day person; he loves Indian cuisine while I love continental food. But we have things in common too. We're both very impulsive and we share similar ideas on holidays. We once went for a holiday to Goa and out of nowhere he suggested leaving for Singapore. The next thing I knew we were boarding a plane for Singapore. Being with him is such an adventure!
My love moment
I remember, only after a few years into our marriage, he gifted me a heart shape solitaire ring, bought with his own money. It was the first ring he ever gave me. But it kept slipping off my finger. I was terribly disappointed and that's when he reminded me, 'What is more important is that you have me.' It was such a touching moment. I realised it's the sentiment that makes jewellery so precious. In the 15 years that we have been together there have been many such moments that have made me fall in love with him all over again. But what remains closest to my heart is when our children were born-it truly was our Platinum Day of Love that we will cherish forever. The warmth in the hug he gave me and the look that we exchanged when we held our little baby in our hands said it all. We knew it just then - that all the love we shared, all the time we had been together was so completely worth it. And as we quietly watched our little bundle of joy sleeping we realised that after so many years of meeting and falling in love and even getting married, we have found a deeper, more satisfying meaning to our relationship and how lucky we were to have each other for the rest of our lives. They have so many surprises in store. Sometimes kids make you happy, sometimes they drive you crazy. But most of all they make you look forward to growing old together with those precious shared memories."
