I Find Funny Women Very Attractive
With romantic films like Break Ke Baad and I Hate Luv Storys in his kitty, Imran Khan sure knows how to woo the ladies. iDiva prods him to reveal his side of the story
Today’s Indian woman…
I think it’s been a very positive, forward trend. Speaking in the urban context, we’re doing alright; things are much better than they used to be. For the most part, there has been a great shift in women having careers, as well as following modern trends in relationships. This is not to say all problems are over; far from it. If you move out of the metros, there is still a large amount of gender inequality and prejudices. These are very real issues that are yet to be tackled.
Intelligent women are not pretty
Beauty is really subjective. There are all kinds of women—the skinny model-like, mid-sized and big built—and people like all sorts; that’s a personal thing. Intelligent women are attractive, at least to me. I find funny women also very attractive; women who make me laugh. I really admire Sarah Silverman a lot. She’s an American actor and stand-up comedian.
Commitment phobic: men or women?
I think it’s unfair to assign these kinds of labels to any one gender in particular. People are people; some are faithful, some cheat, some want commitment, some don’t. In the past, women were not encouraged to have careers. From birth, they were encouraged to get married, be housewives and mothers. The fact that women could have ambitions beyond that was a thought that wasn’t even considered. Now, when they’ve reached a point where they can have options beyond it, we think of it like an even playing field, where everyone has jobs and careers. So, now you decide whether you want to commit or not. Hence, I feel it’s all equal now; men cheat, women cheat, men want to get married, women don’t.
Homemakers vs. career women
You need to balance. I consider myself balanced. I’m serious about my career, but I’m equally serious about having a personal home life; you can’t be one way or another. If I’m with someone who’s only career-oriented, I’m not going to get anything from her and a woman who’s only going to be a housewife is not going to engage me.
Success=conforming to norms
I think some of the biggest actresses, like my favourites Kajol and Rani, who have achieved tremendous success haven’t conformed to any norms. Neither have they played the simple, homely type girls, nor are they girls that are traditionally attractive. They aren’t slim or fair; they are dusky girls with unthreaded eyebrows and no size-zero figures, but there is something about them that attracts people.
Women smarter than men?
Probably. I know there’s a lot of stuff I just leave up to Avantika (Malik, now Imran’s wife) because I’m not able to handle it. Let me put it very simply. Women are better at understanding concepts and men are better at solving problems. Men solve problems in a short, concise way, whereas women have more patience.
