the Hands of a 14 year old Boy
She’s an absolute stunner, but what catches your attention when you meet her is her sense of humility and uncanny energy.
She’s wearing a Dior strapless sun dress and Casadel white stiletto pumps. Her hair is swept away, she’s perky and in a joyful mood as we sit down for the interview.
There was a scene in The Other Guys with your husband and his partner where you are dressed rather sexily and your husband asks you to change. If this happened in real life, would you be as accepting?
(laughs) I’m an independent woman but I have old-school values. My mother is a Cuban and I was raised in the United States, but I still have a little bit of ‘you must support your man and be there for him’ in me. But if I made dinner for my husband and dressed the way I was and he told me to change, that wouldn’t go down too well. But I still think there is something romantic about supporting your man and making him happy.
So, if your husband insulted you in front of others, would you be forgiving?
Yes! I’m a wimp when it comes to people I love. If you say sorry, I’m there if you mean it. I won’t make you work for it. I know that I should be more challenging, but if I love you, whether you’re my boyfriend, family or friends, if you say you’re sorry and mean it, I’m there for you.
Would you ever be attracted to a guy who is not too good looking?
I think that women are attracted to different things in men, and I’m sorry, we aren’t just as visual men are. So yes, we can oversee certain physical attributes if the person has something inside worth offering, like a brain.
So what are the qualities you look for in a man?
I like a man who is smarter than me, a little older than me, a man who has more experience in life so that I can learn and feel protected.
And what is it that you like and dislike about yourself?
I’ve worked really hard for years to accept myself fully, so there’s really nothing I would like to change. But if I absolutely had to pick some thing, I really love nails and beautiful hands and I feel like I have the hands of a 14-year-old boy. I wish I had beautiful nails, but it’s just not there and I’ve learned to accept that.
What are you most proud of?
I’m actually proud of something I always wanted to change and that is my smile, my mouth and my teeth. I used to hate my mouth and I always thought that it was too big and my teeth were too big, but now it’s my favorite part of me.
How did that acceptance come about?
I met a man who said that he loved me because of my smile, that was when I was 21 and this amazing person made me realize that the one very thing I hated about myself was what he found most beautiful and that changed everything.
Is that man named George Augusto?
Yes, thank you.
And who is he?
He’s a Peruvian director and that’s all I’m going to tell you. We’ve been together since 2002.
Why do we not see him with you at social functions?
I think it would be different if I was dating an actor who was famous. There has to be a certain amount of privacy if the one you are dating is not in the public eye because he didn’t choose this. I chose my profession and I don’t want to speak for him ever or disclose something that he might not be okay with me disclosing, so I constantly have to protect that.
So what are your thoughts on marriage?
I think marriage is great if you want to ruin a romance! I’m just kidding. Oscar Wilde said that. I think marriage is a beautiful thing. Sometimes there’s an extraordinary amount of pressure put on couples, especially in this industry, but if it feels right for you, then go by what you feel and not what society tells you; some people are better off having a more spiritual connection vs. something that connects them on a piece of paper. My good friend who was with someone for 10 years, got married and got a divorce eight months later. I’ve seen that happen a few times. It just goes to show how the psychology of it all messes us up sometimes, the idea of staying with one person for the rest of our lives freak some people out.
And is there any downside of being so spectacular looking?
It’s how you carry yourself, the kind of energy that you put out there and how you treat people even before you actually meet them. My mother taught me to be respectful towards others and I’ve been very blessed with the people in my life, I’ve never had a problem with jealous friends or anything like that. It’s the way that I conduct myself, I don’t think that I’m hot, I’m just very grateful for what I have.
Do you have a beauty regime and would consider plastic surgery to preserve your looks?
I exercise, but I don’t like it. I eat relatively well and I’m into my wellbeing spiritually and physically. But I also believe that a woman, in general, should age gracefully. A part of being an actor is to show emotions and I can’t imagine freezing my canvas. I look forward to growing old.
