Time magazine has named Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as "Person of the year". While we aren't surprised, we'd like to nominate our own contenders for 2010's "Indian of the Year". From the box-office smashing Rajnikant to the queen of the badminton court Saina Nehwal, to the guy who put the bang in Dabangg - Salman Khan, vote for your favourite!
Finally we have a sports sensation who didn’t drown her talent in the wave of commercial advertisements and Bollywood glamour! Saina Nehwal made her way into the Hong Kong Super Series final with a three-game victory over sixth seed Juliane Schenk of Germany on 11th December 2010. What's more, she has regained the world no. 2 ranking with this victory, as per a Hindu report. In an interview with the Hindu, she said, “It is always a nice feeling to finish the year as No. 2 in the world. For, you are now one step closer to realising one of your dreams to be World No.1."
Saina obviously has a lot of firsts to her credit: She was the first Indian woman to reach the singles quarterfinals at the Olympics, the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships. Oh... and yes, she was also the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament (roughly equivalent to a Grand Slam in tennis!). And to top it all, Saina is the top ranked woman player in Indian Badminton history. Now that’s who we can surely call the Indian of the year!
His outspoken nature and his Dabangged attitude has been the topic of many discussions throughout the year! After years of courting controversies and rumours surrounding his life, Salman Khan came back into the limelight with a bang this year! The actor brought back his bindass attitude to the big screen with Dabangg, and to the small screen with Bigg Boss 4.
While Dabangg became one of the most-loved movies of the year, Bigg Boss 4 brought a lot of appreciation to his skills as a host.
And who can forget that he is the only star-to-date to have got Bollywood actresses Rani Mukerji, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Karishma Kapoor, Priety Zinta, Sushmita Zinta, - all under one roof for his
“Being Human” show at the HDIL India Couture Week 2010! Only Sallu can do that, can’t he? And he's turning out to be the biggest grosser too - Salman has bagged an approximate of Rs. 200 crore this year from Dabangg, Bigg Boss and endorsements!
Chairman of Wipro Limited, Azim Premji bowled us all over with his whopping donation of Rs. 8846 crore for education in India - the donation being the largest by an Indian ever. Premji’s estimated wealth is believed to be $18 billion, and he has decided to donate $2 billion to the Azim Premji Trust. This donation will finance social activities and not-for-profit initiatives undertaken by the Azim Premji Foundation. Now that’s called a large heart!
According to Forbes, Premji is currently the third richest Indian with a personal wealth of US$17 billion in 2010. Wipro Limited, grew from a company of US $2.5 million to $1.4 billion under Premji's leadership.
President of the Indian National Congress party, Sonia Gandhi became the longest-serving president this year, after having served the Congress for 10 years consecutively.
What's more, Forbes released the list of World’s Most Powerful People in 2010 which included 68 people "who matter" and the top 10 included none other than India’s ruling Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia ranked ninth on the list beating founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates who came in at the No.10 spot. She might not be India’s Prime Minister but she's still a major part of every decision taken by the Government!
Sonia was also instrumental in lobbying for the Woman’s reservation bill this year. “I am particularly happy because women of our country are going to get reservation in Parliament... 33 per cent which is quite a bit,” she said in an interview to NDTV.
He’s been in the industry for several years but his charm never seems to fade. Rajnikanth's Tamil science fiction movie Enthiran that released this year became a commercial success bagging Rs. 62 crore in it’s opening week and is the second highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
No surprises then that he is the superstar of Tamil Cinema, and is also a recipient of the Padma Bushan. The actor bagged Rs. 26 crores for his role in Sivaji (2007) and became the highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan.
What's more, this year the actor went beyond cinema and made us crack up with his logic-defying jokes which circulated through our cell phones and Facebook pages too! He's surely worthy of the Indian of the Year title! What say?
