What is reflexology
Reflexology as a form of therapy involves applying pressure to the limbs of the patient using fingers of the therapist.
“Reflexology aims at physiological improvements in the body which is why oils and lotions aren’t needed for this therapy,” says Dr Prashant Walia, a reflexologist. It is holistic therapy that works on the hands and the feet to restore the balance within the whole body.
“It works on different points on the hand and feet to know if there are any problems in other ‘related’ parts of the body,” says Shweta Nadkarni, a reflexologist.
How it works
As per reflexology, our whole body is connected and can be divided into different zones. “Most of these zones can be accessed through points on the feet,” says Nadkarni.
These points are called nerve endings. And these nerve endings on our hands and feet are connected to different parts of the body. Stimulating these nerve endings promotes relaxation, improves circulation and energises vital organs in your body. Reflexologists use their thumbs and fingers to check for tenderness in muscles. If a particular point is tender, it could mean trouble in that area.
”When specific pressure is applied to a section of the foot, this sends a positive message along the zone. For example, working the heart reflex point on the foot will release blocked energy, not only stimulating the heart but also all other organ’s and body parts in the heart’s zone,” explains Nadkarni.
“Reflexology, when applied properly, can alleviate allergy symptoms as well as stress, back pain, and chronic fatigue,” says Dr Walia. Reflexology also helps to ease muscle and joint pains but is not a complete form of alternative cure. It is also show to improve your emotional wellbeing, increase self esteem and confidence and help you stay motivated.
Is it for you?
Anyone can benefit from reflexology irrespective of age and health condition. Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the nerves in the body and encouraging the flow of blood. In the process, it not only helps reduce your pain, but also treats the source of pain.
Reflexology may be as effective for promoting good health and relieving stress. It can be used to enhance other treatments by keeping your circulation stimulated and your system active.
