How to Pick the Perfect Gown
For fashion divas it's a must. For the bride, it's a shimmery sensuality she likes to experiment with on her D-day. The high-profile banker lusts for it; even the mom-in-law is basking in its luxury! Yeah, we are talking of nothing else but the quintessential Western gown, now a must-have garment for every Indian woman.
Designer Rocky S has this to say about this new Indian fashion statement, "The gown defines a woman's secret desire for lavishness; the ultimate style statement that makes her feel special."
"Gowns make women of diverse body types and shapes feel glamorous, giving them the confidence to make a composed and self-assured entry into any event. Also, a gown is less of a fuss and assures that you are never overdressed or underdressed for the occasion," says designer Anjali Kapoor.
And you thought the gown was only for the red carpet diva? Be the smashing style icon. All you need to know is your body type and the secret to make it look beautiful... Gown power will all be yours!
Pear shaped princess
Pear shaped means wider hips and thighs, narrow shoulders, wide bottom and a small bustline. So, look for fabrics that drape softly over your curves without showing every lump and bump. Satin is not great for you, and sequins should definitely be avoided on your bottom half. Leather is too stiff a fabric, it will add unnecessary bulk (unless, it's that really buttery-soft leather). Try wide necklines like boat necks, sweetheart necks, large cowls and wide V-necks.
Do not wear loud prints or light colours at the bottom. Wear designs with detail on the area below the knee to draw attention away from a large hip area. Choose red or pink on top with a dark skirt in black or navy. Do not be afraid to accessorise. High heels help by creating an elongated silhouette.
Apple shaped beauty
Apple shaped means a large bustline, broad shoulders, narrow hips and a less-defined waist. So remember, layering to sport light fabrics that add dimension to your midsection, helping to
make you look shapely instead of thick. However, do not layer thicker fabrics, because they will make you look bigger. A-line and empire gowns with V-neck should work well for you. This style narrows at the top and flares toward at the bottom. Choose fabrics in solid colours that have a
little stretch so it is forgiving to your size. Do not wear gowns that feature a lot of busy detail, like ruffles, rouching or other embellishments. Anything that clings to your stomach
is a no-no. A monochromatic colour scheme really works well.Wearing the same colours on the top and bottom creates a clean, straight line that lengthens the overall silhouette of the body. Structured jackets on top would be great.
Hourglass diva
Since the hourglass is considered the perfect feminine shape, there is not much to be done but to accentuate this particular figure. Classic cuts teamed with trendy accessories will have you looking fabulous. Be careful not to overdo your clothes with ruffles, bows and other frills as your figure itself is enough to draw attention. Ideal necklines for the hourglass shape are
scooped or V necks as these will accentuate your bust. Avoid high necklines like turtlenecks
as they draw attention away from the waist, also it would be a good idea to stay away from frills around the hem of a top as these will add width to your hips when you don't need it, making you look unbalanced. Strapless or off-shoulder necklines are perfect for an hourglass shape.Try sheer, soft, clingy fabrics and avoid stiff bulky fabrics and design. Bodices will look great on you. Although you can pull off almost all dress styles and shapes, you do need to be careful when it comes to pattern or embellishment. Stay away from heavily-beaded or over-embellished gowns, they tend to make you appear unbalanced.
Banana-shaped bride
Banana-shaped women are normally slender with small or almost non-existent bust lines, slender waists and very narrow hips and legs. The best gowns are the ones which focus on the waistline. Select gowns with a band on the hip to create curves in the areas where you just do not naturally have them. Detailing like ruffles, large prints can work wonders. Also wearing a padded bra to add a cup size is an option. It's also nice to add necklaces and scarves to your outfit. Avoid sheer fabrics; you are lucky enough to experiment with different fabrics and embellishments which the others can't.
