Miniature LightRadio Box Could Replace Cell Phone Masts

Miniature LightRadio Box Could Replace Cell Phone MastsThat little thing he's holding is a miniature cell phone mast, which could complement—and eventually replace—the traditional base stations and masts required to connect us to mobile networks. Developed by Alcatel-Lucent, the LightRadio system includes support for 2G, 3G and 4G signals, with processing outsourced to one larger unit that sits within the coverage footprint.
Although the mini antennae has a shorter range than traditional masts, it's been designed to work together in clusters to bring similar or better reception levels to poor coverage spots or rural areas. Plus they're clearly much less intrusive, so can be hidden away anywhere there's a power supply.
